Whitelightning Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 I just got a 160 gig maxtor sata....can i partition it into 2 80 gigs and run it in raid 0??? Or do I need another 160gig to do that....
suchuwato Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 i dont think you can run one partitioned drive in raid, coz you need two physical drives to plug in
cchalogamer Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 Not ever trying RAID nor haveing the moeny to try im just goign by what i think here. I think RAID requires 2 drives that are exactly the same. Therefore havign a single drive it would not work. even if it did i wouldnt speed anythign up bc ur using the same cable with the same limitations just speed would be split btwn the two partitions. so possibly even slower i THINK. Again if im wrong (meanign someone that has experence tells u otherwise) forget what i said. If im right bouns points to me fo not being a total idiot. Now back to AP comp. Science, time to program some java
Whitelightning Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 Ahhh it was worth a shot...I thought if I partitioned it the computer might think there is 2 drives and then I could use raid 0....oh well....time to order another drive
LobbDogg Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 yes to effectively do RAID 0, you need 2 physical hard drives. There would be no advantage to partition to 2 partitions and try it that way. Plus I don't know of anyway to actually set that up. Any RAID setup utility I've ever used always requires atleast 2 physical disks.
suchuwato Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 if you did partition it would be too slow to be any improvemnet anyway
anthony Posted September 16, 2004 Posted September 16, 2004 thyey do not have to be the same lets say you got a 160 and a 80, that would equal 160gb, its the smaller number that counts.. or lets say you got a 120 and a 160, that would be

henbenley Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 yea the more similar the drives are the better they are going to perform, but raid is still better than no raid
