lilkev715 Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 If you want multiple pc's connected to the internet at the same time you will need a router. Road Runner only allows one IP address per modem. By using a regular switch, the pc that turns on first will grab the IP address from the modem. A router works by grabing the modems IP address one the internet side of the router (WAN), while on the local network (LAN) side the DHCP server built into the router will assign IP address to the computers on the local network. Basically the DHCP server allows multiple PC's to share the same IP address from the modem.
FollowerCTO Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Step one: Install another (to have 2) networking card into your main rig Step two: Connect the modem to the main network adapter on main rig, then connect the switch to your secondary adapter on your main rig that you just installed (make sure both adapters are enabled. Step three: hook the second computer up to the switch. Step four: Assuming you're running windows XP, go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Network Connections. You should have two network connection available. Right click both on at a time to make sure they are both enabled. Then, Right-click you main connection (the one hooked to the cable modem). There should be an option in the menu that says "Sharing", click it, set it to be shared. Afterwards, make sure your computers see eachother, and they should both be able to connect. Please Google for more info.
LobbDogg Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 With the above suggestion though, the one with the two network cards needs to be on for the other computer to have internet access, buy a router if you can, they are fairly cheap and will be nicer than having to run both computers.
