cybergrunt69 Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 YOu can also try using Knoppix (http://www.knopper.net), which is also a 'live CD'. This can be installed on the HDD also, and from what I've seen, it's liked every piece of hardware I've thrown at it, and it runs surprisingly fast for what it is... You may like it, and if not, all you've wasted is the time to DL it, the CD you put it on, and a couple of hours(ish) playing with it. Guest FxXP Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 There are the three LiveCD distros out at this time: Lindows, SuSE, and Knoppix. I tried Lindows one time and was impressed with what it could do for the "Microsoft Rebels", but it gave no controls for compiling apps. Another negative is its "pay-to-download" feature, completely annoying.
markiemrboo Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 There should be support for your SB Live. I expect Creative were just saying they won't offer technical support when using the card under Linux.. stuff like you calling up and saying "Help, my card doesn't play sound under Linux... works fine on Windows! What do I do?" I have had an Audigy running under FreeBSD and Linux before, my friend had his Live working too. I can't remember the command to load kernel modules for Linux though... insmod? Perhaps read some sorta Linux newbie guide?
d3bruts1d Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 SB Live does work under linux. http://www.alsa-project.org/ http://www.euronet.nl/~mailme/ As far as getting the 5900xt to work under Linux, the nVidia documentation is a good place to look. AI32 Drivers - http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display...2_1.0-6111.html Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run" to install the driver, then edit your X86Config file as appropriate. See the text README for more detailed instructions. Information is also available for IA64 and AMD64. There are more than 3 LiveCD Distros (however the ones FxXP listed are the main ones). Jezza Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 You all forget, Mandrake Move... MM2 is coming out soon, and my experience with mandrake is nothing but good. My only problem is getting 3d support for my 9600xt, graphics cards seem to be linux's downfall imo, especially ATi ones, since nVidia has released it's drivers' source to the linux community, but ATi won't...
