Aristotle Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 Has anyone ever attempted to run F@H using Wine? If so, does it even run? Does it finish wu's faster?
Stachman31 Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 Don't know what Wine is, but I use the console version, which claims to be the fastest.
exeter_acres Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 I have a couple glasses of wine almost every night...and F@H runs great! but...in all seriousness.... why not just run the Linux version instead of a Windows version in Wine (or have I forgotten what wine does..?) d3bruts1d Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 Why bother using Wine? There is a linux F@H client.
Ghost2520 Posted August 26, 2004 Posted August 26, 2004 Exeters right... just use the linux version theres no point in trying to emulate a windows version on Linux.
Aristotle Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 The F@H client is slower on linux then it is on Windows....

Aristotle Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 Three minutes a frame or less in Windows 98. Five minutes or more in Linux.
O(V)eGA_l2el) Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 I have it running with Fedora Core 2; the results and timings are identical. hehe
Nemo Posted August 30, 2004 Posted August 30, 2004 I went over to the Folding Community forums to do a little research after I read the claim that the Linux version was slower and found that that isn't the case. According to what I read, the Linux client and the Windows client were compiled using the same compiler so there shouldn't be any difference. If you are comparing times between Windows and Linuz, you must be comparing the same exact work unit - project/run/clone/generation in order for the results to be valid. Flagg7771234 Posted August 31, 2004 Posted August 31, 2004 I have no exp with the Linix version... But as a rule of thumb software that requires float point access will always run better on pure unix. Now this is untrue if you have the GUI loaded and all the other "eye candy" running... Linix and Unix are close nit... I would think it would apply to Linx as well... Even if the code is the same, the processor will be less taxed with overhead crap like font resizing and screen saver math draws...
