I know this isn't supposed to be a photoshop support forum, but this is a quicky and I'll even delete it if someone answers it

 

ok, I'm trying to edit a jpeg off of a web site that's on a white background... this is what it looks like:

 

 

in photoshop, I'm trying to remove the white background totally. Problem I'm having is that there are subtle gradients as shadows and I want to preserve that. I suppose some I'd have to change some of the colors from half white/half orange to half clear half orange.

well i'm not at home right now and this computer does not have photoshop to try out my ideas

but u could use the magic wond, select the white, then do an inverse select, copy and paste

that should work

That will leave it really unclean... What I'd do is select it without the shadow and then create your own later.

CmpFreak88, that seemed to work pretty nicely. I wish there were some feature that let you change all white and mixtures of white to clear. oh well.

You can try selecting by color range. That will give you a slider to control how much white you want to select; and then cut away to transparency.
