Ok here is the thing i have a cable modem and a router. I have 3 computers connected to the router all which need internet acces. If i put another ethernert pci card into my current computer so that i have 2 ehternet ports. can i connect the modem to my computer and then from my computer to the router and still have the other 2 computers have internet acces (those will be connected to the router). I have a Microsoft MN-100 Base Station router if that helps?

hmm... i dont think so, unless you have your computer set up as a server, i also think that the 2 network cards would have to be bridged to do this.. and i also see no point in it? you wont gain any speed by not being connected to the router.. and i sugest that you do connect to the router so your computer dont get hacked up.. becaus you would be supresed what can happen if you dont have a router for your high speed connection.

Definately agree with Asus - DON'T bypass your router, especially when running Windows.

It kinda sounds like you're running out of ports and want to have more computers connect to the router - is this right? If so, get a hub or a switch.

:withstupid:

ya.. thoes are only like 12 to 20 bucks for a 5 port switch.. and it will be alot safer and more efficent

First this is bad! But it can be done.

Your modem to computer, your computer NIC would have a public ip like 216.111.123.123 then your second nic in that pc would have 192.168.2.x AND you would have to enable routing on the computer. You would need a crossover or have a crossover swithch on the WAN port of your router, that would need an IP of 192.168.2.x (not the same as pc). then the LAN port of the router would be 192.168.1.x (another segment).

x= 1 to 254 (2 through 253)

This will create a "honey pot" design. You will see virii like nimda and blaster on the computer like crazy, even have hacker threats.

You will have a clear understanding of IP and routing after doing this....

OR buy another hub/swithch and add to your ports...
