I'm getting ready to put a system together for my daughter. She is 5 years old and won't really be playing any game that is too intensive (ie. no Doom 3, Halo, UT2K, etc.)

What I have in mind for her is the following...

Motherboard...Intel D875PBZ (already purchased and need to RMA first)

Case ... http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...ductCode=140031

Hard Drive ... 80 Gig Maxtor http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...100622-315006-1

Video Card ... Abit R9600SE Radeon 9600 SE http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetai...ductCode=324027

Memory ... 512 Meg Kingston PC3200

I already have a sound card that is adequate.

I'm undecided about the CPU, I'm thinking either

Intel

I think it would be fine for a 5 yr old. It's a good thing you don't plan to OC, since Intel hates us OCers, they don't allow for OCing with their boards.

I would go with a 2.4C over a 2.26B any day of the week. There IS a perf difference. I would get that 512mb in 2 sticks so you can run dual channel.

Also, if you do ever decide you want to OC and get a better mobo, that 2.4C should hit 3.4-3.6ghz with little difficulty. So it's more future proof than the 2.26.

May I suggest! ( just did this for my 4yo boy)

The case, For a girl may I recomend the KITTY or RAVE KITTY!

http://www.atxcases.com/cases.htm

For the mobo, not going to oc? want somthing rock solid and easy to reinstall the os? Go with the Intel gerg2l line. They have a great video card on board that will play all the "Jumpstart" "reader rabit" and "toddler" games perfectly. The on board video will surprise ya, one of the best I have seen.

oh, it is intel 478 and can go up to 3gig, has 4x agp but the more expensive mobos have 8x.

For the mobo $70

Cel 2.4gig proc $50

256 ddr333 ram $30

40gig hdd $60

Floppy keyboard case $200 (budget good for a keyboard! they can be rough on em)

And a 15" monitor for $70

your cost is like $480 to $500!

Did this for my kid.... and, don't forget to fold on that puppy!!!

WOW! Those are some lucky kids. My son got his first PC when he was about 4 (now 7), and he's now on his 5th computer (I think....). I've NEVER put new parts in his machine, I get them - then my replaced components go into his computer.

Also, other than folding, I can't really think of any reason that a little kid's computer needs to be that fast. Right now, he's got an AMD 2000, 512 ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb vid. That's more than enough for any game he's needed (except UT 2k4), and he's got internet for the other stuff.

If you are gonna build it up with new fast parts, more power to ya - but I don't think you need to go all out, or spend more than a couple hundred bucks on it.

Flagg - those cases might be just what my daughter is looking for!

Is 2 too young for a first computer?????

ya Man 2 is kinda young so wont really use it let along have any reason to be on it

My son is 3 weeks old, and he's already got his own PC. I picked it up at a yard sale for $50. P4 1.4, Gf4 Ti 4600, CD/RW, etc... Right now it just gets classical music played on it and provides a bit of a night light. If I can find a decent OC mobo that will support a 1.4 it's getting juiced! Heck of a night light though, huh? :P
