KezzerDrix Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 (edited) I am considering purchasing a athlon xp 3200 barton core 400fsb processor, I am wondering if it is overclockable or if they are locked at the factory. I have read alot of people are buying 2500 xp-m and overcloking them to above 3200 speeds I am trying to figure out what to buy. Thanks Edited August 18, 2004 by KezzerDrix
jammin Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 They will be multi locked.. but theres nothing stopping you raising the fsb.. as long as your ram can handle it.
KezzerDrix Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 I dont think my ram could take it. I have geil golden dragon 3200 ddr memory and my asus mb will only allow me to apply 2.8 volts to it. So I might be better off buying a 2500+ xp-m and overclocking it to say close to 2400mhz?
Whitelightning Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 My 3200+ barton overclocks great...I have it at 2.6ghz. The multiplier is unlocked on mine...get yourself some OCZ ram, my OCZ overclocks like a champ.
KezzerDrix Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 So do you think its a 50/50 chance on being locked or not? I can't afford new ram. I have a 1700 chipset that went out and I am trying to simply replace it with the most bang for my buck.
exeter_acres Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 They will be multi locked.. but theres nothing stopping you raising the fsb.. as long as your ram can handle it. re-read that line..... the multi will be locked..... (unless the CPU is about a year old, but since you are just now buying it...that is highly unlikely) but you can raise the FSB.....depending on the mobo you have
KezzerDrix Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Okay suggestions then, I want the most bang for my buck to go into this asus a7n8x deluxe geil golden dragon ddr3200 512mb
r_target Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Look at exeter's sig. That should tell you which cpu to buy. Beyond "Toaster Certified."
Whitelightning Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Unless you buy a used 3200+ I doubt you will get one unlocked from AMD...Get a mobile 2600+ and a DFI Ultra Infinity...you should be able to hit 2.5ghz with no problem.... r_target Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 A mobile will still scream on air cooling, if that's what you mean.
