Phil Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 I put up a new site about a week ago, and Googling the keywords gets zero results. What does it take to be "found" by the search engines? Is there anything a site owner can do to jumpstart the process?
exeter_acres Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 many sites need to be submitted to. and the "spider" out to sites and find them... takes time.. also has to do with links and connections to other sites and such..... I used to use software called Addweb years back when I worked on a website where I used to work www.thesnowleopard.com seemed to work really well for us..... Linux or others may have other ideas
Phil Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Just googled Addweb, I may try it. If I did nothing the engines would eventually find my site? Any freeware equivalent to Addweb?
d3bruts1d Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 As exeter_acres mentioned, there are "programs" known as spiders, crawlers, and robots that basically do nothing more than travel through websites. Based on the header information and text on a website will tell the spider what the site is about. The spider will store the information it find about a page in a database, and then take a link to another page. How do spiders know where to look? Well... like exeter_acres said at first, submitting them to a search engine is a good place to satrt. Spiders will usually start at directories, and follow the links out. These directories can be the ones created by search engines, or just human made directories (like the FAQ listing thread)... as long as there is a link to it some place, the spider should be able to find it. Phil Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 And to "submit to" means using a prog like Addweb? I googled "website promotion software", Addweb seems to be the only game in town!
d3bruts1d Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 And to "submit to" means using a prog like Addweb? I googled "website promotion software", Addweb seems to be the only game in town! Most (if not all) search engines have something like this: http://www.google.com/addurl.html http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html Or you can pay a company and they'll submit it for you. exeter_acres Posted August 18, 2004 Posted August 18, 2004 Addweb worked for us, but that was several years ago...... Not sure what the guys at thesnowleopard.com are using now.... and I know the search engine methodology (sp?) has changed too..... if it is a money making site, it may be worth it.... if more for fun.... maybe not.....
