For the P4's "C" is Northwood (recommended) and so are A and B, "E" is the Prescott (the hot one). You need an AMD Athlon 3000+ to compete with a P4 2.8C because of how AMD over-rated a bit.

Only the "C" and "E" P4 has HyperThreading, so that is recommended if you can get one. What HT does is it evens out the load with a second virtual processor, that makes for awesome multi-tasking AMD could only dream of. ;)

And the Athlon 64's memory controller results in memory latencies that P4's can only dream of. ;)

And also, the deal with the Athlon rating system is only true for the Athlon XP's. Yeah, the Athlon XP 3200+ is only about as fast as a 3.0C, but the Athlon 64's are the other way around. An athlon 64 3000+ will perform about on par with a 3.2C.
