peshewah Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 my cpu is getting a little hotter day after day. I'm running a stock heatsink and fan on a 478 pinn intel processor? If so, can you tell me at what point is too hot? thank you ahead of time.
GregP24 Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Anything over 55C at load is too hot. I prefer load temps of around 45C or less.
peshewah Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Should I shut down my comp until I get a new heatsink and fan? I would take off the side panel and point a big fan towards it but my two year old son likes to work on computers too. Can you suggest a good heatsink and fan? Nemo Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 Thermalright SP-94 and either a Vantec Tornado (loud) or a Panaflo fan.
stitch_626 Posted August 16, 2004 Posted August 16, 2004 If you're going to be getting a new heatsink and fan now might be a good time to try lapping. That should lower your temps as well. The guide here on OCC is excellent!!
red930 Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 i am running a 2.8c ht p4 and my temp is around 26-27c idle and 40-42c on load. i did do a crazy thing though i cut the fan out the stock heatsink and then mounted the clips to a tornado(load . fan) but in my case it aint bad at all but having that on my p4 took my temp down 10 degrees! if you want i will post pics
DBZ Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 Don't forget some AS5, and get yourself at least a TT duct that should help also.
airman Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 hmm...45c is a little high. what speeds/voltages are you running it at? try as5...(arctic silver 5...grab some at compusa or someplace) and make sure it's seated correctly. i've got a stock heatsink/fan on my 2.4c D1 stepping running at 3.0 at 1.575v and i get idle temps of about 28-30 (depending on season) and loads of about 51-54c (kinda high, but still...that's pretty good idle for a stock fan)
HomerJaySimpson Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 I wouldnt worry about it. My temps are always 45 idle. But i guess thats pretty normal in the summer (even though i live in a cold place). I need to clean the inside of mine and reapply AS5 cause it's getting a little old. But im too lazy to do it and it's still running. When im surfing and listening to music, my temps will go to about 55 too Too much dust methinks...Ill get around to cleaning it someday. GTSticky Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 You don't need all that wacky, self-put-together, $50, too loud heatsink junks0r. Get a Zalman 7000 All-copper, clean it every 6 months or so, and enjoy silent computing with low temps.
gravy Posted August 17, 2004 Posted August 17, 2004 your temps are fine, although the cooler the better, so if you feel comfortable, get a good performing cooler, google the web for P4 HSF reviews, etc....get what you want but copper or at least a copper core base cooler will be more effecient i run my P4 core Celeron 2.0 at 2.9Ghz with a Vantec Aeroflow HSF and Acrtic Silver Ceramique in between and at 100% load, ambient temp of room 21 degrees C, my CPU temp runs 42 degrees C, so you aren't in any immediate danger for sure
peshewah Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 thanks for all input. I bought a $15 coolmaster piece of crap. Not too impressive. Runs a little cooler but not much. I'm in the middle of moving and have to be out by the end of the month. I tryed to find something local (Springfield,Mo.)but had no luck finding anything descent. Computer stores would order anything I wanted. Hell, I can do that. So after I get settled in my other place I can order from....... someone. Thank again, you guys know your stuff.
