AMD vs. Intel

On the operations per clock cycle, run any A64 and it's Intel equivelant on a CPU bench, divide the score by the clock speed, there you go...ratio of performance per clock for each. AMD will destroy Intel. I still respect Intel and I know they have their uses, but would much rather have an AMD any day (unlocked(ish) multi, lower cost mainly)

but the opterons use the extra HTT links to go between cpus in an SMP system. it's not used for the rest of the system.

 

 

and I don't know where you're getting info on 940's return as M2 with DDR2... IF it happens spring of 06 is way to early. I keep hearing more like early to mid 08 before it comes out... hinging on Intel's move to DDR3 (which AMD also plans to do, not DDR2)

Personally, I kinda liked the old Cyrixes. They were a high quality chip, and were intercompatible with AMD's.

wow, those were back in the dark ages of computer building the mid 1990's... they were physically compatible with Intel's Pentiums, Amd's K5's, K6's, K6-2's and K6-3's.

I can try to help with some information and clarification.

 

Opteron uses 3 buses Hypertransports which can be connected directly to another processor or core that is to say with a chip managing the PCI-E or the AGP. The Hypertransports also provide direct access from core levels to memory through the onchip memory I/O (integrated Northbridge). Opteron is dedicated server PC and is declined under 3 versions: 100, 200 and 800 (respectively of 0, 1 and 3 buses processors which can be used for machines using 1, 2 and 8 Opteron). Each version is declined in various speeds.

Integrated HyperTransport Controller: HyperTransport is a bus of communication inter-bridge making it possible the various "bridges" of the motherboard to communicate together. It uses a data bus to evolutionary and variable band-width. It thus contrasts with the other standards of lower generation, like V-Link of VIA or MuTIOL de SIS which functions in client/server mode.

 

AMD will be changing their Athlon64 product line to include an integrated DCII controller (Support for Dual-Channel DDR2 667 memory). The company will consolidate its current Socket 939, 940, and 754 into two all new sockets in spring of 2006. AMD is pushing hard as INTEL has already started work on their DDR3 memory supported chipset. I can

I think for now, Ill buy AMD until intel, Gets cheaper, and shows me they are better for gaming. Till then AMD is my master.

for now, intel makes good procs for encoding, and amd is the absolute best for gaming.

AMD is pretty much a better all round processor than intel, at this time. A the same price point, intel is having trouble even things it's traditionally dominated AMD in, esp when it comes to the dual cores.

Yonah, and the the other next generation intel chips do look like they will be more competative though.

 

Funny thing is, by the time most people finnaly realise than AMD has had a very firm performance lead for the the last 2.5-3 years, intel may be making a comeback. So, the ignorant fanyboys will aways be a step behind...
