ian_logsdon Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 (edited) I'm new to the whole world of overclocking, modding, computer enhancing, and was wondering if anyone could help me out. i would like to overclock my pentium 4 1.8g to somewhere higher, as i do sound production with my pc and would like to crank out as much speed as possible. my only problem is that i cannot really afford to put in a new heat sink, as i am saving up for a 9800 pro all in wonder card, and a powerbook g4 (ill never aford it). im purchasing a case with a window and im putting in 3 fans and rounded cables, but right now im using my failed e_periment with modding (the window I cut has yet to work, i plan on adjusting the hole a bit and trying again. so right now, i have a machine with a completely open side. it's ugly, but i bet its more heat efficient than having that wall there. anyways, i would really love to get my machine working faster because i cant afford to buy a new processor now. any help would be welcomed with open arms. thanks. oh, one last thing, i cant afford a 9800 pro yet, but im buying one at the end of the summer, till then im stuck with a geforce 2 card. can i overclock that, i dont really care about it anymore? p.s. i just got this little imac from a yardsale for 50 bucks and im not sure what i can actually do with it, anyone who knows anything about mac, its a 233mg processor, so im kinda thinking that its completely useless and maybe i wasted my money. its still a pretty nice little thing and a good deal, so, any suggestions as for what to do with the little guy? again, thanks pps. check this out http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20031230/index.html Edited July 11, 2004 by ian_logsdon

hardnrg Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 p.s. i just got this little imac from a yardsale for 50 bucks and im not sure what i can actually do with it - a boat anchor - a door-stop dunno, MAYBE if you fresh install an OS on it, it might be good enough to give away to someone for a home/net pc you could probably type letters/email on it... ian_logsdon Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 im running a p4 1.8 gig, on an asus P4S8X (it may be an P4S8X-X, i cant remember and am at work at the moment). im running 512m of ram at the moment, but im going to add another 512 on black friday, as well as, hopefully, a decent dvd drive. my case right now has space for up to 3 fans, but like i said before, its got an empty window on one side now. ive only got one fan installed, but im getting new fans off of pricewatch for cheap, so thats not really a big concern. i'm also getting rounded cables off pricewatch so thats another bit of cool air. the problem is i have the stock heatsink installed, and cant afford a nicer one. right now im running a geforce 2 card and am considering eXperimenting with overclocking it, especillay once i get my 9800 pro. my soundcard is an m-audio audiophile 2496. i am planning to get a lan party case http://3btech.net/blandsipo03m.html because the handle would be nice for transporting to my dorm/to musician's homes, etc. even with three fans, i suspect i have a large limitation on what i can get out of my p4 because of the whole heat thing. also, how e_actly to i get into my bios and adjust the speed, ive never done it before and i wanna try it when i get home. hardnrg Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 usually the [DELETE] key to get into bios... i have to press it really fast like before the monitor even shows anything... i just keep pressing it really fast cos seriously it starts loading windows in like 2 seconds... the p4 stock heatsink isn't too bad so you could live with it for a while... but yeah, the temps and the speed limits imposed by it might get to you after a while... you can get decent coolers for moderate prices... not sure of that kind of price range for p4's tho... so yeah press delete at boot up (aka power on) check out the contest for 1GB Free RAM
5 to the k Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 p.s. i just got this little imac from a yardsale for 50 bucks and im not sure what i can actually do with it, anyone who knows anything about mac, its a 233mg processor, so im kinda thinking that its completely useless and maybe i wasted my money. its still a pretty nice little thing and a good deal, so, any suggestions as for what to do with the little guy?again, thanks 1) Sell the IMac to a college kid that needs it 2) Donate it (Tax Deduction + Helping ppl out) 3)Learn the ...other way... of doing things (don't even think about linux.) Keep in mind that Apple speeds aren't as low as they sound, new Apples Ghz speeds don't even come close to the PC ones and are supposedly just as powerful
ian_logsdon Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 so i go to my bios screen, and what do i see, my current speed setting is 2400 mhz. there's an option to go back down to 1.8, which means that mwave, the company i bought the board from, went in and pre overclocked my cpu...thats such a rip! i pushed it a little further, turned up the vcore, and everythings running fine. side problem, i just put a fedora linux install on a second hard drive and now my linux install is locking up whenever i leave it on for more than like an hour. this is crazy, as linux is supposed to be stable and be able to run for months without crashing, no problems. grrrr. on the imac issue, im puttin os x on it and brining it to school with me. if someone needs a computer ill charge em for it and they'll take it, otherwise im gonna use it as a chance to learn about mac OS before i get a powerbook (god willingly) and i guess thats about it, as its still not particularly fast even when you take into account the speed diffence between architectures. anyways, i guess thats all. peace
