BloodySunday Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 So in AnandTech's "Western Digital's Raptors in RAID-0: Are two drives better than one?" article they end it with the line "Bottom line: RAID-0 arrays will win you just about any benchmark, but they'll deliver virtually nothing more than that for real world desktop performance. That's just the cold hard truth." when just 1 day before for their high end system guide they said "There are genuine performance advantages to a SATA RAID array, and a RAID 0 Array with two of the fastest SATA drives that you can buy makes for a blistering high end system." Any one else just find that a tad bit Hippocratic?

broooooooce Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 Hippocratic? I have no idea what the oath that doctors take has to do with RAID arrays, but hey. Hypocritical? Perhaps.
r_target Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 Hippocratic? I have no idea what the oath that doctors take has to do with RAID arrays, but hey. Hypocritical? Perhaps. I think contradictory is the word we're lookin' for.
Guest FxXP Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 Agreed, contradiction / contradictory is also what I would say. Hypocritical is a person blurting about personal opinions without any real logic behind them. In leamon: Blowing smoke out of ones behind. adj : professing feelings or virtues one does not have; "hypocritical praise"
r_target Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 Yes, for example, Marion Barry denying he smokes crack and then getting busted for it-that's a hypocrite. And as for Anandtech, I find most of their articles are pretty much on the money, but in the race for ever more superlative terms to describe performance, they are certainly not alone in contradicting themselves. That would be, as Agallion said, marketing. Also, as Fxxp said, it's blowin, smoke.

lilkev715 Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 In the article written by Anand he said that there is no real world benefit of running a raid 0 array. However, Wesley Fink wrote the buyers guide stating that users would benefit from a raid 0 array. So there is obviously a difference of opinion between the two different authors. LobbDogg Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 Yeah I saw the same article and really had to wonder, cause I definitely notice a performance gain with RAID 0 on Raptors over just 1.
GTSticky Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 Of course you do LobbDogg, I do as well. If I were to guess, when Anand is suggesting that it's no big deal, he is talking about Mom getting her email, making word docs and reading MSN on the web. Mom won't see any performance boost but your average OCC gamer will. Or we could just say Anand is an idiot.. I prefer the former. I read where he suggested that your average gamer won't see any performance gain. Maybe that's true, but the games I play load levels that can be 10s or 100s of MBs in size. Suggesting that there's no gain there flies in the face of reality and contradicts facts already in evidence.
Dasterdly Posted July 9, 2004 Posted July 9, 2004 I have noticed an increase in performance on an everday level. Apps load faster, and close faster, windows boots up faster, things just run on a faster level wiht raid. is it an expense mom and pop should spend when all they do is check email? no. but for me, dropping $240 for raid was a good expenditure and well worth it.
