Need New Motherboard, What You Suggest?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm new on here and have been searching the net to find out what options I have for a replacement mobo for my existing system, any help would be be appreciated.

My current board doesn't seem to like my current specs so I need one that will and also be ok to upgrade to it in the future.

I have a AMD Athlon XP 2100+ CPU, I only have PC133 SDRAM(512mb) but need a board that will accept this for now and also take DDR memory. Also I would want the board to have 8x agp slot.

I have come across boards that accept both PC133 and DDR ram but I'm yet to find a board that will accept this and an 8x agp slot.

Any suggestions???

Thank You

welcome to occ... there's a contest on at the moment where you can win 1GB of PC3200 ram that you might be interested in...

my advice would be to get a mobo that supports ddr only - forget the pc133, it's too hard to make anything run on it well anymore... and maybe just get one 256MB stick to start with if you can't afford 2 sticks...

that way then you can gradually replace your mobo, mem, then cpu, and have an 8x agp slot as a bonus...

:)

hope you like occ!

if you go to the "my controls" section (near the top right of the page) and you go in there, you can go to "edit signature" and put details of your set-up in there so we can help you out better...

Wow! that was quick reply:-)

Thanks for your advice, I thought I may have to give up the old ram.

So what is a decent mobo working on a tight budget? What brands should I look for and stay well away from?

Thanks

my albatron mobo works great and is very stable. stay away from biostar, ecs, pcchips. good brands would probably be abit, asus, dfi, and many more. for upgradability in the future, get a board with an nForce2 chipset. the via and sis chipsets are not good at all ;)

give us a rough idea of how much money you can get together and we can work out what you can get... like if yer on a tight budget then you can still get a decent board, and you only need a super board like the DFI ultra infinity if you have nice fast ram and an xp-mobile (imho)

so yeah, give us a figure and we'll help you out...

the DFI nfii 400-AL is a good budget board with massive oc potential... very good performance for the price...

I don't think some of you are actually reading this thread. He says he only has PC133 ram.

Dood, make sure that any suggestions you get on here actually have the PC133 slots before you buy it because a lot of people here don't READ posts before they respond.

One board that has slots for both PC133 and DDR is the K7S5A, but it sucks. You really should getcha some DDR... then....

If you are gonna stick with the athlon xp 2100, get yourself an ABIt Nf7 or an ASUS A7N8X-E. The Abit will overclock better according to most people.

If you were to switch over to Intel, get an ABIT IF7 Max 3

To be honest I'm not big on motherboards and how much they cost, I really just want something to pass me by for a bit on the current specs I got apart from the PC133 RAM.

I just need the cheapest decent board but not one that will give me more problems like the one I have now.

phew... I've never recommended this board to anyone before, but it might suit you:

I actually have an Athlon XP 1800+ that I built for my Dad that has been running on this board since September of 2001 without any issues. He has a gig of PC133. The biggest problem with the board is the SIS chipset and a near total lack of overclockability, but it works and has proven to be stable at least with my setup.

Thanks Bruce

hardnrg advised me to give up my pc133 ram so that's probably why people are telling me to go with other boards, plus going from your answer I think it is right to give it up.

do you know any amd mobo's with pc133 and 8x agp, cos i don't

anyway, pc133 sucks .... :P

$56 is pretty cheap, but then you'll need some ram too... i dunno, do you want a mobo that you can upgrade later or do you just want one that you can just forget about later? (like just leave it in an old rig)
