sYstEmATiC Posted June 14, 2004 Posted June 14, 2004 hey peeps, i just tried to defrag one of my secondary drives and it says that some files cant be defragmented (mostly movies) and it is still massively fragmented. how can i get this drive to defrag??? thx Brian. andrusk Posted June 14, 2004 Posted June 14, 2004 for starters. I would just run defrag two or three times until it cleans it up real good. I dont really see a reason why it wouldnt move a big file unless you didnt have enough free space to move it. But you do have enough so I would just try it a couple more times. Another thing......... dont pirate. Its bad

FollowerCTO Posted June 14, 2004 Posted June 14, 2004 it's because your desktop looks like a Longhorn desktop. Atleast, that's what I see. Must be a theme.

Jezza Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 Just make a copy of the movies on your desktop, delete the original and then move the copy to where the original used to be... It's a dang sight quicker that re-defragging, and it creates a nice movie file that's not fragmented.
Vampire Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 Hmm thats strange. I just defragged my secondary storage drive (videos, music, games etc) and it did it very quickly and defragged ALL files.. we're talking 60+ gig of files.. It's a dang sight quicker that re-defragging, and it creates a nice movie file that's not fragmented. Unfortunately, this is the best idea so far to get your video files contiguous. Disk defragmenting is heavy on memory usage, as well as disk free space. Usually the way the algorithm works is a significant portion of data is mapped into memory, then the engine goes to work on it, and once complete, the data is written to disk in a contiguous manner. Your setup isn't necessarily low on free space, but there just may not be enough to allow the large video files to get defragged properly. Should you free up more space, you'll probably see more favorable results. Otherwise, moving the files to another partition, and then moving them back will be your best bet for getting them contiguous.
