brisck1 Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 Ok witrh summer here my CPU temp has started to go up the ying yang. In the winter i invested in a really good Heatsink and fan +3 case fans as my system was overheating alot. I got a freind to fit them at the time and im wondering now if the CPU fan has been fitted right. I opened up my case to give it a quick hoover and after started to notice certain case fans were sucking In air rather than blowing out. Then I noticed the CPU fan is also sucking IN air onto the CPU. Now I always figured that fans should be dispering or blowing air away from the CPU and case... Am i right?? Need to sort this ugently as im worried my CPU and other fans may be on the wrong way... Cheers Rob
airman Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 well...what are you temps then? here's what you need: cpu fan blowing onto the heatsink (works best) 3 intake fans or more (one side, one front, one back) 2 Exaust fans or more (one back - closer to psu, one top) what heatsink do you have? also, what thermal paste are you using? try refitting the heatsink. brisck1 Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 Hi thanks for the speedy reply, I got my CPU fan which is currently sucking air onto the processor, a fan at the back by my CPU and below PSU blowing out air and one at the side of the case sucking in (ithink) and 2 at the front which i think are also bowing out. Usually my CPU temp has been 50-60oC (athlonXP2800) but recently has shot up to 60-69oC. I just took the fan off and got rid of all the duston the heatsink (quite alot) and other dust on fans etc and it seems to be cooler although my case is open right now not sure of the make of thermal paste as a freind fitted it... General Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 It is alot better for the fan to blow the air on to the HS because then it disaptes all the heat. The heat escapes from the copper fins, and is blown out through whatever openings.
DevilMB3017 Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 Heres what I would do with your situation. Have the back fan and side fan blowing out of the case. Have the two fans up front blowing air into the case. This gives you a nice balance and steady airflow. As for the CPU Fan, 99% of CPU fans blow ONTO the heatsink, not away from it. If the fan went away, the heat would still be on metal. However, if the fan blows onto the metal, it cools it, allowing the heat to escape out the sides of the fins.
