Special_K Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Well I got a call from one of my good friends today asking me to build him a killer system that will be used for gaming, internet, photoshop and video editing. I came up with this list, it will not be overclocked (that's why I'm using Via and the RAM I chose). Also, he wanted it to look good The parts will all be ordered off Newegg.com. Thanks for the help! Specs: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Aopen AK86-L (Read good things about this board) Fortron Source 400W PSU Sapphire 9800 pro 128MB Geil Value Series 512 x 2 pc3200 (Remember, value because it won't be overclocked) Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM ATA133 Aopen 8x DVD +/- RW Dual Aspire Blue CCFL's (12") Antec P-160WF Samsung 193V 19" LCD Total Cost: $1650.00USD I really like the case and I think with everything in it it's going to look and perform amazing. I have heard very good things about Fortron PSU's being rock solid, plus it looks good. The 3000+ was my decision because it's about $50 cheaper than a 3200+, but I was wondering if I should opt out for a 3200+ just for the 1mb L2 cache? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated, just wanted to run this list by a few more guys, this will be my first endeavor into A64 computing (The attached file has the individual prices as well)
poligoon Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 Looks pretty sweet, the Antec P160 is a beautiful case. I just transfered my system into one about an hour ago. You might want to think about a differnt monitor though if they plan on playing high end games like BF:V ans such, casue its only got a respnse time of 25 miliseconds and from what I have read you want one with 15 ms response time. Just a thought.
bigfnb Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 why not a 64 fx???? Im lookin into building a new rig too. so this forum will help. is the fx that much better than the regular amd 64?
Special_K Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 I decided not to op for a 64fx simply because of the price, I don't want to have him spend that much on something he doesn't need that much. As for the monitor, I understand where you are coming from but I am looking for the best 19" flat panel monitor for the lowest price... please, I am open to input there. Thanks again for your support and suggestions!
hardnrg Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 if yer mate seriously wants the rig for digital imaging and video editing, do him a favour and spend the money that you would have spent on a flat panel on a high quality flat crt like a NEC/Mitsubishi or Sony... The resolutions are higher, the dot pitch better, the contrast ratios and colour matching are better... because of the inherent price difference between flat-panel and flat-screen crt you could buy an uber high-end crt for the price of a flat panel (or possibly even a 21" one!) I've got a NEC/Mitsubishi FE750+ 17" screen and run it at 1280x1024 and it is by far the best quality screen I have ever seen or used... one of my mates mistook it for a flat-panel because the screen is perfectly flat... I'm sure for the price of "the best 19" flat panel monitor for the lowest price" you could get a high-end 21" flat-screen crt

Yea, maybe if it came in black it would look better.
Special_K Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 He really liked the case and I am going to love working with it I'll talk to him about the monitor though, I agree with you guys that a CRT would probally be better for him... We'll see if he bites on that. Other than that, would you guys change anything?
Shadowfactor Posted May 19, 2004 Posted May 19, 2004 (edited) I think you shoudl go with the 3200 bigger cache , Also get the Mobo that eva_unit_0 has it's a Albatron K8x800 pro 2 , there very good boards and thier cheap( $125) or go with a Asus ASUS K8V SE Deluxe which is a great board Edited May 19, 2004 by Shadowfactor

Just a thought. Yes, the faster the responce time the better, but, 25ms is livable, atleased with my Samsung 173P, it is vertually non exsistant. Its hard to find a 19" with a lower than 25ms responce time do to is size. If you are concerned about ghoasting, go with the 172X, has a 12ms responce time. I am still in love with the 173P tho =) just a fantastic monitor.
