Look in "services" and try disabling it there, there is a service called "messanger" DONT TOUCH THAT ONE, look for "Windows Messanger". I think thats how it shows up. The other one I mentioned ...Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start

Ummm, I think the "messenger" service is one that should be disabled, or else you get popup spam messages through it.

The Windows Messenger isn't a service (not that I've seen, anyway). You can stop it from loading by disabling msmsgs.exe in the startup section, and/or renaming Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe to something else, so the file won't be found, and won't start.

Start----->Run-------->

type this in the "run" box

without quotes.. "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"

you will maybe get an error..press ok or whatever ..and reboot..

I read somewhere that once you kill msmsgs.exe, change the Messenger directory in Program Files to MessengerOFF..... windows messenger won't start up anymore after that. Doesn't totally get rid of it obviously, but stops it from starting, which is what I hate. I did this and it does the trick for me.

To get rid of Windows Messenger Permenatly.

Run>gpedit.msc>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Messenger>and enable both on the right.

that's exactly what i've done on all my comps, but that's NOT permanent, that is temporary, as you can always just go back and enable it. But that's the reason i chose to do it that way...just in case i ever wanted it.

this is the best way, it actually gets rid of it, besides, you can re-install it from windows update if you want it back
