Anyone Want Itanium?

Recommended Posts

never worked? they can run 32-bit code through emulation.... oh well..

Funny, my opterons do it no problem in Windows XP 64bit Beta, throw any program on that OS, 32bit or 64bit, and it runs flawless...

No emulation necessary :bah:

becuz the A64's are backwards compatible.. no need for emulation :)

itaniums were made back in the 90's no wonder there obsolete and from the looks of it, INTEL didnt want to waste money on them to bring the up to 2.0- up freq's.

There is a second set of Itaniums, that run at up to 1.2 GHz I believe. They aren't meant for clock speed, but bandwith in server enviroments, hence they are VLIW style chips, not x86. For what they are, they are incredible. Too bad Windows IA64 was never stable enough for them.

The only serious software that I've seen running natively on Itanium (we have a few itaniums at my workplace) Is windoes 2003 64-bit enterprise edition with SQL server 2000 64-bit enterprise edition.

I know there's a 64-bit linux wich works on itanium, but I've never seen it myself.

It's a great DB plataform when used specifically with that OS and DB. But it's not good for anything else.

and running 32bit code with emulation is a total waste.

Stay away from itaniums unless you're planning on building a datacenter or something like that.

And motherboards, ram, etc cost a fortune.

Also you can't go out and buy windows server 64 bits. It only sells pre installed with servers from HP and some other brands, so there's no use on buying a cpu alone.

The only case in wich you could use a spare itanium is if you allready have a server with an empty itanium slot.
