bob6 Posted April 14, 2004 Posted April 14, 2004 I get three temps reported by my system. Two are always 25C no matter what, so I'm guessing those are bogus. The other one is my CPU temp (at least that's what the BIOS says it is). Question on that CPU sensor... Where is it actually located? I have a P4 3.2 GHz. Is the sensor actually inside the CPU, or is it on the MOBO (Gigabyte 8IK1100). Also, reading Intel's White Paper on thermal management, it says the stock HSF has a variable speed fan that is thermally controlled. Is that thermal controller through the MOBO, or is it something in the HSF itself? Thanks, Bob6
kurosen Posted April 14, 2004 Posted April 14, 2004 Your temp sensor is mounted on the motherboard.. Not sure about your specific board but probably the middle of your CPU socket. THE HSF if thermally controlled would depend on the HSF, most likely though the HSF has a probe of its own... EDIT: BTW, welcome to the board... Some_Guy_ Posted April 14, 2004 Posted April 14, 2004 Don't touch the Llamas Yeah, they might spit at you. If there is a board-mounted sensor, it's often in the middle of the socket, where the temperature can be most accurately read. bob6 Posted April 14, 2004 Posted April 14, 2004 Thanks for the welcomes to the board! I have been lurking for quite a while, just decided to register and start posting recently. I've really enjoyed this board so far. Folks have been very helpful, and even when topics get "heated" (bad pun for this forum), people seem to remain respectful. I guess I'll have to learn about the lamas on my own... So, like I mentioned, the only temp reading I seem to get is the one from my CPU. Does that mean that is the only sensor that I have that works? MBM5 shows three sensors listed, but only the one gives a reading. Is there anyway to add additonal sensors to the system? I'd love to be able to get a reading on my case temperature. BTW, my system: Antec Mini Tower LAN BOY Case with stock True Blue power supply. Boxed (retail) Intel P4 3.2 GHz CPU (800 MHz, 478P, 512K) Stock Intel P4 heatsink and fan applied with silver thermal compound Kingston HyperX PC3700 RAM - 2 @ 512MB with heat spreaders 2 WD 7200 RPM 160 GB SATA hard drives run with SATA RAID Gigabyte 8IK1100 MB with latest flash (FG). Intel i875 chipset EVGA - NVidia GeForce FX5900SE 128MB Video Card Added two additional Antec case fans, intake in the front, exhaust below the power supply in the back. I also have a DVD-ROM drive, a DVD-Burner and a CD-Burner attached to the IDE Bus Thanks again!! -Bob6 P.S. I never realized how much there was to hardware. I'm a server guy by trade... I do Win2K Server administration and SMS Administration / Package design and distribution. To me, hardware was always just a box that stuff ran on, and I never really gave it much thought other than piecing together systems to play games on at home... this board has really been educational for me. Blue Dragon Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 Well the other temp sensors can be like chassis sensors and stuff like that. You should get one of those nice fan controllers to be able to have a sensor for case temp and all that. They can be anywhere from $15 to $80. Good Luck!
