NVIDIA Drops RTX 2060 Price and AMD Allegedly Ups RX 5600 XT Clocks

Competition is a good thing, but it is definitely interesting to watch prior to products releasing. In apparent response to AMD's CES 2020 announcement of the Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card, NVIDIA is dropping the price of the GeForce RTX 2060 to $299. This a decent discount that also places it much nearer the RX 5600 XT's MSRP of $279 and makes the GeForce GPU a more compelling purchase. It looks like AMD might be responding to this move based by increase the GPU's performance before it even releases on January 21.

Supposedly AMD is achieving this performance bump by sending a new BIOS for the GPU to AIB partners increase the total board power from 150 W to 160 W. While a difference of 10 W may not seem like much, it should allow the GPU to increase its clock speeds for greater performance. Though the original report of AMD providing new from HKEPC, VideoCardz has also spotted that Sapphire has adjusted the specifications for its upcoming RX 5600 XT Pulse on its product page. The Boost Clock went from 1620 MHz to 1750 MHz and the Game Clock, what you should be able to expect in a game, went from 1560 MHz to 1615 MHz. The memory speed also changed from an effective 12 Gbps to 14 Gbps. Sapphire is only one partner, but if it has modified these specifications, it is possible others will do so too.

Technically this is all rumor, though the Sapphire changes do support it, but at least we should not have long to find out, with the RX 5600 XT releasing on Tuesday. This would also not be the first time AMD has reacted to a move by NVIDIA by adjusting something about an unreleased product. Prior to releasing the RX 5700 series, AMD dropped the price of those GPUs in response to NVIDIA's RTX 20-series Super cards.
