AMD Releases Drivers Bringing Radeon Image Sharpening to Vega GPUs and RX 5500 Rumored

In the middle of September AMD released drivers with an unexpected feature, and that was bringing Radeon Image Sharpening to several Polaris-based GPUs. Radeon Image Sharpening was a feature introduced with the Navi-based RX 5700 series as a means to sharpen the details in DirectX 9, DirectX 12, and Vulkan games. Though the Polaris GPUs do not support RIS for DX9, it was still surprising to see the Vega-based GPUs, like the RX Vega 56 and RX Vega 64 skipped. When asked, AMD's response was that it could bring RIS to these GPUs, but wanted to see if there was much desire for it, and apparently there was. With Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.9.3, the RX Vega 56, RX Vega 64, Vega Frontier Edition, and Radeon VII now also have support for RIS in DirectX 12 and Vulkan titles. These drivers also bring support for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

In other AMD graphics news, VideoCardz is reporting that AMD may be announcing Navi-based RX 5500 GPUs on October 7. According to the rumor, there will be both desktop and mobile versions, with the desktop targeting the mid-range, potentially replacing the current RX 560. They will have a 128-bit memory bus and paired with up to 8 GB of GDDR6, which would make sense for that market segment. As NVIDIA is expected to also announce new GTX 16-series GPUs in the same segment soon as well, the coming weeks may prove interesting.
