TSMC Files Suit Against GlobalFoundries, Claiming Patent Infringement

Near the end of August, GlobalFoundries filed lawsuits claiming TSMC was infringing a number of its patents and requested injunctions to prevent devices using infringing products from being imported. Now TSMC has filed its own lawsuit against GlobalFoundries, also claiming patent infringement of 25 of its patents. These cover a number of technologies and if the requested injunction is granted, could see GlobalFoundries having to stop production across its 40 nm, 28 nm, 22 nm, 14 nm, and 12 nm lines. As its foundries are in the United States, where the lawsuit was filed, GlobalFoundries could be forced to stop production, while TSMC, with its foundries outside of the US, cannot be stopped but the companies importing blocked products could be.

Arguably, this was expected after the GlobalFoundries' lawsuits were filed and next will likely come negotiations between the two companies to grant the necessary licenses. Considering the significant impact the requested injunctions on either side would have, hopefully these negotiations will be completed before they can be granted or put into effect.
