Vega NOOB

Recommended Posts

Ok so I purchased a Asus Rx Vega Strix oc from Newegg for $269 instead of a Rtx 2060

Mainly because of the 3 free games and it is pretty much equal to a 2060 minus the Ray tracing that we are still waiting for.

I will be the first to admit that I am a Nvidia fanboy so this was a very hard decision but I think I made the right choice.

I am have some issues adjusting as far as overclocking and temps & and for some reason I can use Msi afterburner without fan control problems.

I think My heat issues I suspect are from my case , the maserbox 5 pro is NOT a good case for airflow do not buy !!!

any advice would be helpful

Hey now jdm_freak

On being somewhat of an Nvidia "Go Green" fanboy myself, and having crossed over to the other side on several occasions in the past, all i can say is that the red team has done much and worked well for me, as well as can be expected from any high end gaming gpu solution on the market these days... Now as far as the new bleeding edge stuff just out right now, I have nothing to offer other than the same youtube informational vids that you have likely already studied, and the same ol' tech writing and reviews that are out there on the webs...  but for the record, I have felt more of a flat sort of 2 dimensional, "something missing" feeling from the old AMD hardware after switching over, that I think has to do with Nvidia Physx and how it processes versus AMD but I haven't been able to pin it down... Frankly I truly hope you enjoy and have fun with your new toy, and I'm certain you will get used to it in time...

So far the card is great the only issue I had was my fault by not running driver sweeper before and I cant use Msi afterburber . I do miss the overlay

but coming from a 1080 that I gave to my son when his 1060 went out I really dont notice a difference

I scored 19,833 on Firestrike with a gpu score of 24,500

Can you recommend a stand alone overlay like aferburner ?

Glad to hear you're happy with it so far, and I hope you will continue to be. I know I have been quite happy with my Vega 64.

Since you brought up temperatures as a concern, I'm wondering if you have looked into using Radeon Chill? Of course it depends on the game and your personal tastes for things like lowering the frame rate intentionally and how much to allow it to lower, but it can have a very nice impact in some games.

As far as overclocking it, I've never tried overclocking my card, just undervolting it, which is something I see many recommend for Vega, both for just improving temperatures and efficiency, but also as something done in conjunction with overclocking.

Also, it isn't exactly stand alone, but if you want to monitor the GPU, maybe look into the AMD Link app. It can monitor temperature, power, clock speeds, fan speeds, and frame rate from a phone, if it is on the same network as the computer. It is even possible to do some WattMan tweaking through, but I have not messed around with that much.

Your most likely going to have issues with MSI Afterburner switching cards from GTX 1080 to AMD Vega, unless you perform a full uninstall of RTSS and AfterBurner (with profiles removal) and then perform a CLEAN install.

The current AfterBurner 4.6.0 Final (v14820) added a ton of AMD Vega support for extended thermal monitoring, and fan control support for AMD Adrenalin 2019 drivers family.

Hopefully your issues with adjusting, overclocking, temps, and fan control are covered in the release notes for v14820.  I just mentioned a few from the Guru3D Download site:   https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/msi-afterburner-beta-download.html

Good Luck with the new card.  :)

I think My heat issues I suspect are from my case , the maserbox 5 pro is NOT a good case for airflow do not buy !!!

off topic, but is the 3 fans in front not enough airflow?!? What more do you need for air lol.

On a side note the Vega cards are known to run hot. but it looks like you got a deal with the 3 games and for the price it beats a RTX 2060. Ray-Tracing is useless on the lower end cards anyways. Last AMD card I owned for gaming was a Radeon 4870. Its been a few years. Actually I bought a 290X at one point for mining. Never used it for any games though.

I have a evga clc 280 in front and even when a had a gtx 1080 ftw hybrid there was not enough airflow , there are no vent on the top of the case so there is nowhere for the air to go except a single 120mm fan at the rear. it is a horrible case for airflow
