Guest_Jim_* Posted March 16, 2019 Posted March 16, 2019 Since the announcement by NVIDIA of its Turing-based RTX GPUs, there has been a great deal of interest in ray tracing for video games. Though ray tracing is an old technique and used in many applications, it has typically been too resource intensive to be possible at the frame rates gamers demand, but Turing's RT cores have accelerated it enough to be used in games like Battlefield V and Metro Exodus. Those effects required the RT cores to reach the necessary performance, but now Crytek has implemented real-time ray traced reflections that is both API and hardware agnostic. This experimental feature is part of CRYENGINE's Total Illumination system, and is currently in a bespoke version of CRYENGINE 5.5. We will see it implemented in future versions of the engine though, and that version will be optimized to take advantage of performance enhancements present in the newest graphics cards from both AMD and NVIDIA and in APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan. To demonstrate the technology, the NEON NOIR video embedded below was made. As you watch it, bear in mind no screen-space reflections are used, a common reflection technique in modern video games, and that it was rendered in real time on an AMD Vega 56 GPU.
