Guest_Jim_* Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 There are a lot of devices around us with computers built into them, and a good number of them connect to the Internet, so it is not completely unreasonable for there to be anti-virus software installed on them. But it does seem odd to have one present on a practically locked-down platform. Samsung televisions produced with year will come with McAfee Security for TV pre-installed on them. This will make Samsung the first company to pre-install security on its Smart TV devices, but as TechSpot points out, since these televisions use Samsung's Tizen operating system, the need for an anti-virus seems small. Although, Samsung is undoubtedly being paid by McAfee for deploying its software on its products. SpikeSoprano Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 Bad enough it comes preinstalled on pc's and it's a pita to get rid of, wonder if it can be uninstalled from the tv's. They can't sell it so they have to give it away, lol.
Braegnok Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 Don't want your television compromised by a crypto-miner. I would be more worried about the lack of security in Roku's platform, than my smart TV. To exploit a smart TV a hacker would need access to the target TVs Wi-Fi. This can happen perhaps if the user of a laptop or smartphone on the same network is tricked into installing a malware-infected app or visiting a webpage with malicious code,.. basically smart TVs are no different than any other device running on well-known software containing its own weakness and vulnerabilities, its just a matter of time before exploits will be developed and made available for every criminal or hacker out there. ir_cow Posted March 2, 2019 Posted March 2, 2019 I also was reading how Samsung has built-in ads that can't be disabled. SO everytime you switch inputs or use the apps, you get targeted ads. If you use the Router the block it, the ad squares appear green. Looks like LG is my brand of choice now.

It makes me wonder if there is or will be a move to 'open source' smart televisions. I'm sure there are already Linux distros someone could get working on the components. Of course then we'd see DOOM ported to them as well. Not like that would be a bad thing, but it always seems to happen when a device's OS is opened.
