EA Expects Lower Revenue Partly Due to Battlefield V

In recent months the stock market as a whole has seen declines, but some companies have been hit harder than the average, including EA. As the Seeking Alpha source shows in a graph, EA stock has fallen 45.6% since its peak in July, compared to 12.4% for the NASDAQ as a whole. The company has put out a revised net bookings guidance for fiscal year 2019 of $5.20 billion, down from $5.55 billion. While EA does give multiple reasons, including exchange rates (though these may also lower operating expenses), and an expected drop in mobile business, Battlefield V has also be identified as a cause.

For one thing, the game's release date was pushed back by a month, but also it has hardly been as well received as previous Battlefield games. While the game has won awards for some of its new gameplay mechanics, the inauthentic aspects and response by then-Chief Design Officer Patrick Söderlund to fan reactions have apparently resulted in a lack of interest, depressing sales. (It was announced in August that Söderlund would be leaving EA. His comments that prompted negative community reaction came in July.) EA also changed its monetization scheme for Battlefield V, opting to make all game updates free, instead of using season passes or purchased DLC to bring in more money.

Big companies like EA and Bethesda remind me of what recently happened to my soccer team, Manchester United. United is a huge franchise, one of the biggest football clubs in the world but the team was on a pretty bad streak under the last manager Jose Mourinho. Basically, the talk was that "the manager has lost the dressing room" meaning that despite the fact that the team has top players and one of the best managers, thing looked pretty bleak on the pitch, there was misunderstanding between the players and manager's playstyle was totally different from what they used to. Same happened to EA and Bethesda. They lost the dressing room, started chasing the profit completely disregarding what the community wants. Their playstyle (season passes/ loot crates/pay-to-prevail items) looked good on paper but gamers are tired of being loved only for the money in the pocket. I remember the times when I used to launch EA games (Need For Speed series, Command and Conquer series etc) as soon as I saw the EA logo I immediately knew that I'll be in love with the game. Now? I am expecting that as soon as I log in/start the game, I'll be offered to spend an astronomical amount of money to "get the best equipment". Or, struggle to play at all, like it was with Fallout 76 or Division when it came out (Division - Wildlands was such a mediocrity, I've forced myself to play for an hour or so expecting better story development but alas it was disastrously boring). So yeah, instead of just making copycats at a conveyor speed, maybe they should consider CD Project Red's approach, and deliver a quality product even if it means waiting for a while. (btw, still not sure what happened to quality games like C&C Generals, that could definitely get a sequel but instead are buried in the sands of time or much beloved by many Battlefield 2142 which never got another game in the futuristic setting)

Overall I think that BFV sucks (as politely as I can put it).  I'm a huge BF fan and have every version of the franchise through V now.  The pattern is predictable for me after all these years.  I'll start the latest version and think to myself "man I hate this latest version", but I keep playing and by the sixth or seventh session I'm all in and almost completely forget about the previous release that had occupied hundreds of hours of my time.

Not the same with BFV.  I keep playing it hoping to learn to like it, but after about ten hours of game play I'm still under-whelmed and totally frustrated.  Snipers that can seemingly kill you with one shot from a mile away, tanks and other armored vehicles that feel like they move at a snails pace, people that have a KD of 500/5 and my list of gripes goes on.  Don't get me wrong, the PQ is beautiful if you have the right video card and can run high/ultra or some combination of the two.  But everything else feels like a change in the wrong direction.

  • 1 month later...

Well, 59 hours in and I'm getting better  :)

I've adjusted some of the video settings and the game doesn't look as "soft" even though I've given up some eye candy.  Frame rates are up over 100FPS and game play is pretty smooth.  Still way too many hackers, but at least the game is almost enjoyable now.
