Guest_Jim_* Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 A not too uncommon scenario today is for someone to download an application that they might not completely trust, but need to run. This is something employees at Microsoft face rather often, so they have put together a new tool to help keep their systems safe. Windows Sandbox is a light virtual machine that works as part of Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise build 18305 to create an environment that is separate from the host system, protecting it from any malicious activity of the application. Something interesting about the way Windows Sandbox works is it uses a dynamic image to keep the size of the virtual machine small on disk. The way it works is by using a base image for the virtual machine that is allowed to change and then linking to immutable files from the host Windows system. That base image is about 100 MB but when Windows Sandbox is not installed, it is compressed down to just 25 MB. To help make it faster to launch the environment, it will save a snapshot of it, preserving the state of the memory, CPU, and disk that can then be started up without having to run through the entire boot process. To improve the graphics experience, if the hardware and drivers support it, graphics virtualization can be used as well, providing the acceleration of your GPU. Otherwise Microsoft's CPU-based rendering will be used. Source: Microsoft Back to original news post
