I'm Back - Get me squared away.

So I recently lost a friend to cancer and that got me thinking I needed to start folding again, even if my various decrepit rigs can't do much. So I back after a 5 year hiatus... dang it didn't seem that long till I added it up.

Anyway...

I've been wading through all the new fldc stuff and I have one question, is i really worth the hassle or should I just keep folding under my old username and not worry about the coins? I know squat about crypto currencies and don't really have much faith in the idea.

On the hardware side of things, is it still possible to set a utilization level? I feel like that was something I used to be able to do. The new browser thing shows power usage (low, medium, high), but my CPU utilization is ~90% regardless of what I select. If I can get a controlled low rate I'll load up on my work computers because they are always up, but mostly idle. Just pulling data off the GC/MS every few minutes.

Good to see some familiar faces still posting, I was afraid this community would have died in recent years.

Currently is not worth the coins you get, but if you are going to fold anyways. Someday you can cash in on it. https://foldingcoin.net/index.php/resources/profit-calculator. CPU folding is pointless these days since the projects are the same. Video cards below the GTX 460 cards are not supported. I wouldn't even fold with that because last gens GTX 1060 would be about 20x faster and draw less power. I hate to say this, but I think your computer is to old. It costs more in resources than F@H gets in return. It would be better to donate money than to fold with that computer.

If you do decided to build a newer computer and fold. You can make some money if you wait long enough. Road-Runner folded for a few years and eventually folding coins become worth enough for him to get a nice new computer.

Hmm. That is frustrating. I wish a new computer was in the cards, but its not.

I am running an AMD FX-6300 on a freebie mobo right now. The rig in my sig died a glorious death rendering ARC GIS projects about 3 years ago.

Christmas donation it will be I guess.

What up Nyt, still swapping PC parts like underwear?  :teehee:

The video card is a some nVidia office product. Don't remember really. I had kinda just figured a modern CPU should be able to crank out some wu's but I guess not.

I took a brief look at your how to, but I shelved it after seeing your last post.

Good timing to enter the Xmas contest then, maybe you'll get lucky and get a nice GPU! THats like 2/3 of a new PC right there!

And welcome back!

A good CPU can do like 70-150k PPD. My single RTX 2080 does 1.5 million.

CPU folding is not vary productive,.. even the 1950X Threadripper running 32-threads & single RX Vega card will only do 500K PPD. https://imgur.com/QugFIPM

GPU folding is the way to go nowadays, you will get more points and not have the heat issues vs folding on CPU slots.

Copy that, barring a contest win I guess we will see what uncle sam gives me back come april.

Thanks guys.

It's not that expensive to get started with a mid-range card running single GPU slot, using your current platform  i7-930 CPU for running instructions only with no CPU folding slot.

The GTX 1060 card can be found for apx. $200, and will do 377K @ default settings, 400K PPD with an OC.  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1310598-REG/evga_06g_p4_5160_kr_geforce_gtx_1060_pcie.html

You would want to set up new client with FLDC in your name,.. so you receive folding coin, save your coin till FLDC prices go back up before selling,.. over time you will have your return on investment plus money to upgrade folding rig.

Down the road when you upgrade folding rig platform,.. go with current gen i5 CPU with low TDP to run instructions to GPU folding slot.

The GPU will only be used for folding 24/7. So enable the IGPU, run your monitor on the integrated graphics for daily tasks, streaming video,... your GPU folding slot will use two CPU threads for instructions, leaving all the other threads for your daily tasks.

I keep a SFF single card folding rig with blower style card under my desk to keep my feet warm during the winter months.
