Patches Rolling Out to Add Ray Tracing and More GeForce RTX Features

At long last Microsoft is rolling out the Windows 10 1809 update (after pulling it to fix some serious issues) and with it comes support in DirectX 12 for DXR, the DirectX Raytracing API. NVIDIA's RTX technology is built on top of DXR and so has been unused since the GeForce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti launched. Of course you also needs games to support DXR and the first is Battlefield V, which is featured in the video below.

Another GeForce RTX feature that is finally going to be released to the public is DLSS, Deep Learning Super Sampling. The Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition benchmark is receiving an update that will allow GeForce RTX users to try the feature out. Another patch enabling a feature is coming on Monday and it is for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. With it NVIDIA Adaptive Shading, formerly known as Content Adaptive Shading, will be available. It works by reducing the rate of shading for pixels that are not changing from one frame to next, reducing the amount of shading work needing to be done. Naturally we can expect more patches in the future.

I called it! Ray-tracing crushes the frame-rate. Its strange that everything but low RTX gives similar results. Its like whatever DICE is turning off or down has no effect until the lowest setting. I wonder what the SLI results are.

 

Guru3d has the results RTX 2080Ti. Battlefield 5.

 

4K Resolution:

I don't think you were alone in expecting the performance to tank, but I don't know how many would have expected this large a decline compared to not using it. Not sure why Ultra and High would perform similarly (actually, just had a possible hypothesis) but in the Hardware Unboxed video for it, they note there is apparently a bug with Medium either being High or Low, so the data for that preset is useless currently.

The idea that I had is the RT cores could introducing a bottleneck or stall in the process for the High and Ultra presets. If the difference is additional effects and not additional ray tracing, then the load on the RT cores would be the same, as would the time they take to complete the work. So long as the other GPU components take less time to finish than the RT cores, you get the same performance.

SLI results could be very interesting because ray tracing takes a significant amount of memory and bandwidth. Depending on the implementation, I could believe it if SLI actually hurt performance, but of course they could/would be implementations without that issue.

With this first, initial set of results, AMD's decision to wait on DXR support until its full product stack can support it makes more sense, because, hopefully, by that time the technology will have matured enough to not represent such a performance hit. (Perhaps temporal reprojection could be implemented to improve things.)

Reminds of how PhysX worked when CUDA was new. Not enough compute power. Maybe NVIDIA will sell a dedicated Ray-Tracing card just like PhysX tried to do. I would honestly buy it if A) the game supported it and B) Double my current frame rate. Connect it via NVLINK so not to slow anything down :)

 

Low DXR looks graphically worse than just leaving it off based on that video (Time 3:43). The reflections are minor and distracting. It takes away the immersion. My mistake that was just low settings.
