The purpose seems to be to connect an m.2 ssd to a DDR2 ram slot. Weird and I don't get the point.

I don't think it would work unless a chip is fooling the system into thinking its X amount of ram. isn't DDR2 still faster than a NVMe drive?

The DDR2 slot is only being used for power, the M.2 connection is the NGFF type (the kind SATA M.2 drives use) If you looks close the data traces on the board go to the SATA connection NOT the DDR side of the adapter.  

 

A quote from the product page "confirms" it with a rather poor translation:

 

 

3, the DDR2 card seat power supply mode is adopted, one end of the SATA data Cable is connected to the product, and one end is connected with the computer to supply transmission data

 

Not something I see a need for, but I'm sure someone needs it for some strange use case.

ah, thanks for clearing it up. a M.2 adapter in a Dimm slot that runs SATA. Very strange.

Yeah but I thought those Dimm.2 slots on the Asus were pinned differently so you couldn't put memory into it on accident.

Yup. There is a label that goes over the slot, identifying it as DIMM.2, and it would physically block a normal DIMM from being installed. At least that is the case for the Zenith Extreme. You can see it in images of the board, but if you'd like I could also grab the riser card to look at, as I do not have it installed.
