Guest_Jim_* Posted October 5, 2018 Posted October 5, 2018 In my experience, for the most part Windows updates are not as bad as the stereotype suggests, but I would unquestionably be very upset if what some users are reporting for the new October 2018 update happened to me. The reports are that users are seeing their personal files removed, and previously installed programs to. Normally during an update, if Windows cannot preserve the files in place, they will be moved to a freshly-created Windows.old folder, so you can find and replace them, but the impacted users are saying they are not there. Instead all of the data is just gone. Unfortunately, as Windows Central points out, we do not appear to have reproduction steps for this issue, which makes it harder for the public to avoid while still updating and harder for Microsoft to fix. Hopefully they will be able to fix it soon, but if not you may want to manually back up all of your files. You can create a system image through Backup and Restore (Windows 7) in Control Panel, but also if you have Windows 10 Pro you can go into the Advanced Options for Windows Update and defer feature updates for up-to 365 days. AkakmanH Posted October 5, 2018 Posted October 5, 2018 Yes, this phenon has been widely reported. In past Win 10 updates I have had my Win 7 games , MS Office and Documents trashed. Part of the problem is also that Defender is always installed even thought I removed it. Defender is notorious for stopping old programs from loading. I have the app to reload Win 7 games and the MS Office installer + the toolkit to reset the key. I am waiting to see how bad it gets. Asus Z270 WS, and my Dell 7050 and have only noticed a few issue's with one of them so far,.. the Dell Optiplex 7050 Micro, since updating when scrolling a page reading if I hover the mouse pointer over an item the screen will glitch/shake till mouse is moved,.. did not see that issue listed in the 27 most common issues listed on Windows site,.. and the Dell also had issues with spell check and the sound Realtek Audio,.. both quickly fixable but the screen shaking glitch still working on that one.
