dling Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Im looking at a new build. Torn between the i7 8700k vs the i7 8086k. The 8086 has faster clock speeds but i dont know how well it will OC. Any thoughts on the better cpu would be great. Thanks.
dling Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Seems that they are the same proc.Just a bit better bin number with a small amount of increased speeds. May not be worth the price difference.
Braegnok Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 Better bin number chip = higher overclocking with less Vcore applied than mainstream chip. Most delidded 8700K chips need 1.35V for 5.0GHz on all six cores stable,.. and the 8086K will do 5.0GHz on all six cores with 1.25V. So if you can snag an 8086K for $50 dollars more, and plan on overclocking it's not a bad deal.
dling Posted August 27, 2018 Posted August 27, 2018 (edited) I will look into it. Microcenter sells cpu and MBoard sets at 30.00 off cpu price. Edited August 27, 2018 by dling
Braegnok Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 (edited) MicroCenter Labor Day deals sound sweet,.. Edited September 7, 2018 by Braegnok
dling Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 Which m/b would u recommend ? http://www.microcenter.com/product/5001930/intel-core-i7-8086k-limited-edition,-asus-rog-strix-z370-e-gaming-cpu-motherboard-bundle
dling Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 (edited) Or http://www.microcenter.com/product/5002003/intel-core-i7-8086k-limited-edition,-asus-rog-maximus-x-hero-wifi-ac,-cpu-motherboard-bundle The strix is 89.00 less then the maximus . Not sure the the max. Is worth the difference in price. Edited August 28, 2018 by dling
Braegnok Posted August 28, 2018 Posted August 28, 2018 (edited) I would go with the Maximus board,.. for the fan headers, dedicated water cooling headers, and faster memory support. You more than likely will need to flash BIOS for the 8086K,.. the factory first edition BIOS does not seem to support that chip. dling Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 can I flash the bios with having the 8086k in the board? No cpu?
Braegnok Posted August 29, 2018 Posted August 29, 2018 (edited) With any Asus ROG board you can. Use the Asus EZ Flash Utility and a USB 2.0 flash drive under 8GB, formatted in fat32, and latest BIOS for i7-8086K. Rename extracted ROM file on USB drive to M10HWIFI.CAP. The 1602 BIOS version will also work for upgrading to the new Beast i9-9900K on Z370 chipset boards.
