wevsspot Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 Back Story: Last weekend I had another set of fans on my MSI GTX 670 PE OC go bad. I have had two of these cards in SLI since 2013 and this is the second card that the fans have quit working. The GTX 670s have MSI's TwinFrozr cooling systems on them. I had to replace the fans on the first card last year and now I'm back at it again on card number 2. In both instances I've had to order the fan replacements online and wait for their arrival. In the meantime I've always just slapped a PCIe slot fan cooler in place as a temporary solution and waited for the replacements. Since I was overly a bit frustrated dealing with this for a second time I figured I was going to start shopping for video cards. I ran across a fairly decent deal on some Zotac GTX 960 4Gb Amp! Edition cards so I figured what the heck, added them to my cart and checked out. I couldn't see plopping down the going prices for a single 1070 or 1080 and I haven't been a red team guy since I can't remember when. (disclaimer - I do have an AMD card in my HTPC ) So I'm going to compare the performance of my GTX 670s in SLi to the new GTX 960s in SLi. Power consumption should be way down, and at least the fans should work I hope. Ran a few benchmarks on my 670s in the last week. Vantage 3DMark 11 Uningine Heaven 4.0 And I know exactly how the 670s perform in BF4. It will be interesting to see if the new GTX 960 4Gb cards in SLi can hold a candle to the old guard GTX 670s. I've been a Crossfire / SLi fanatic since they started making motherboards and video cards that supported it. Crossfire HD4850, SLi GTX 460, SLi GTX 670 and think I had a couple of GTS 8800 in the mix as well. I'm just playing and testing here. May be permanent, may not be. Braegnok Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 I also have fond memories of GTX 460 SLI setup and although a pair ran $400, neither AMD nor Nvidia flagships of the time stood a chance. With its predecessors having that sort of history, it seems reasonable to expect big things from dual GTX 960s. The GTX 960 brought Maxwell to the masses by essentially halving a GTX 980 in parts and price. Billed as the company's 'sweet spot' card the GTX 960 is meant to deliver on value, offering more performance than the competition with considerably better power efficiency. Sweet spot GPUs have typically been an affordable way to achieve high-end performance via SLI or CrossFire. Looking forward to the benchmark results. Clean the lube the fan with it. the fans will come back to life and work wonders. I use this in all my fans. I bought replacement fans off ebay again for a whopping $16.99 with free shipping I've got some other drags on my finances right now, but at some point before year end I'll probably be graphics card shopping again. I bought the GTX 960 AMP! Edition cards for $118 a piece and it was one of those that I just didn't think I could pass up at the time. It sucks that one of the two cards was defective When I start shopping again I'll likely just jump up to a GTX 1070 and put my SLi / Crossfire days behind me. I'm at an age where I need to simplify Got a sale add today and the Zotac GTX 1070 Mini looks like a pretty sweet small - mid sized card that packs a punch at an attractive price point though.
