How to keep guests off LAN?

I have a verizon Fios modem/router but it does not support guest network

I want to let people access the internet but keep them off the other computers and NAS, etc.

I tried using one of these range extenders, and I enabled "AP isolation" but I was able to see and access everything on the router the range extender was attached to. not sure if its just junk and broken or if its working as its supposed to.

so now I am thinking about cascading a 2nd router, but I dont want to run into this problem again where anyone who connects can see everything on the first router.

what are my options to make a guest network that cannot access other devices on it?

yes I could password every single share on the network

but people would have to log in every single time they access them and they need to be accessed alot

and guests could still "see" the devices and folders just not be able to open them

If these network drives are on Linux / Samba you can disable them from being discoverable. If you're connect to through Windows, it should save your credentials so you don't need to keep logging in. Are these guests using their own devices or one of the devices at the location? Easiest solution would be to just buy a new router and put the ISP gateway in bridge mode. Most of those gateways aren't good.

yeah I have a netgear nighthawk but I hate to waste it on just adding a guest network

do you know of any cheap routers that support guest network I could pick up on black friday?

not really fond of DDWRT either but creating a SUBNET seems to be another option

Not sure what version of Windows you are running, but why not just used the built in Password Protected Sharing.  Alternatively you could put your LAN PCs into a workgroup and password protect it.  Every other "guest" PC would need to join the workgroup before they could see your network shares.......... no?

thanks for the replies

there are other things on the LAN besides windows PCs like printers and WD mycloud

anyway, I found an old Belkin N450 router in a junk bin

and it supports guest network with the latest firmware which I updated

I decided to cascade it by running an ethernet cable from the first verizon router to the 2nd belkin

it seems to work good, you can connect to the internet as guest and all the LAN is blocked off from being visible

however, I cannot connect through the Belkins ethernet ports to anything, no internet or LAN, etc.

more of a headache to diagnose, but oh well dont care right now

cant access the router anymore wtihout doing a full reset from scratch but the guest thing is working which is fine
