Got a 980 ti still kinda dissapointed in its 4k capability though still impressed most games run around 30 fps or better...don't exactly want to get another 980 ti seeing how it will cost me for a card and also i'll need a new PSU as a 750W isn't enough for sli...like the performance of a 1080 however think the 1080 ti will be better so im starting to save to get one once released hopefully for under $700

Yea, I'm running a 4k (4096 x 2160) primary monitor with a 1920x1080 as a 2nd monitor off a 980ti. It does pretty good just looking for a little more, and some of the games I run really hate sli/crossfire. so I need a big-boy single card..

and a 980ti to a 1080.. not enough of an upgrade..

I agree Hyper.  I was (am) amazed at how happy everyone is with the 1070/1080.  I think they typically shoot for 2x the performance of the previous, or slightly under, as to not make sli/crossfire obsolete.  But these cards came out and are, what, like 20% better or something?  Maybe better power consumption but for power users, who really cares.  I think if I even had a 970, I'd have a hard time justifying an upgrade, but as always I guess it depends on what you're doing and how much money you have to blow through.

I had 970 sli and sold them for a 980 ti just for single card performance due to games having sli issues...from now on I think im going to stick with 1 single powerful gpu over sli until ALL games come sli compatible but seeing how long sli has been around now I don't know if this will ever happen

I think the 8GB VRAM is what made this series so good. No game uses 8GB yet and it scales very well when you think about the future. Now console and PCs have the same amount of memory, it makes cross-platform support much easier to develop for.

Yes the 1080 is only about 20% faster than a 980 Ti, but its lower power, more vram and cheaper (up until the fire sales to drop all the 900s stock). All of this add up to a better product and anyone who has/had a 980 or lower could make the jump and not regret the buy.

I can't remember a time when 1 generation newer cards doubled the performance of their respective previous generation equivalents.  That just doesn't happen.  And why is everyone so concerned about 4k?  I understand it's better resolution and can make for better graphics but the DPI on a 24" 1080p monitor is already a nice sweet spot and if you want something more then just get a 24-27" 1440p monitor.  Computers aren't ready for 4k gaming yet.  It's the equivalent of running 4 1080p monitors.

My thoughts exactly. I dont want 4K gaming. The costs associated with it are just too high. Instead I went for a 27" 1440p monitor, which my 970GTX runs perfectly well.

And hearing that even top-dollar cards run @ like 30~fps at that resolution is just crazy to me. If I am dropping that kind of cash I want far more performance.

However, would love to hear from some of the big spenders who have invested fully in 4K gaming. Is it worth the cost? Can you really tell the difference between 1440p or 1080p?

Ok, well not doubled.  But then, I guess we could also argue what is a true generation and what is rebranded crap.  So it got me wondering and I found a site that compared the 280, 480, 580, 680, and 780.  I chose 2 game benchmarks and a synthetic for each. The second, or 2 digit number is the percentage increase over the previous.

780 94.5 27% 74.8 41 4448 29

680 74.2 49 53.2 31 3456 52

580 49.8 18 40.5 21 2280 22

480 42.3 39 33.6 61 1866

280 30.5 20.9

And then if we average these, we see that

780 32%

680 44

580 20

480 50

280

And if we wanted to look at averages of averages, then the typical increase we have seen over these 4 or 5 generations is 37%.

Now, I look at this sites comparison of 1080 to 980, doing the same thing, 2 random games and a synthetic.

1080 89.01 23% 73.6 21 63.9 17 20

980 72.5 60.66 54.7

And then if I average those, the 1080 is 20% better. Which is roughly half of what we have typically seen over the previous 5 generations on average.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the 580 a rebrand of the 480? so maybe it's low 20% number shouldn't even be in there, making the difference even greater.

As long as everyone is praising these tiny increases and paying big money for it, that's exactly what you will continue to get. Actually it may get worse as they continue to see just how far they can go. I'm convinced they've had the ability to do much better things for a long long time, but they milk it to earn every penny they can. If they happen to make something better than planned, they can even control the performance within the drivers. And then later put in faster memory, release power within the driver, and call it a new generation.
