DDR4 is currently the highest level of DRAM available, but like all technology it shouldn't stay that way for long. At the Intel Developer Forum it was hinted that the specification for DDR5 could be completed by the end of this year, with availability expected to begin in 2020. As with all steps forward in technology, DDR5 will offer several benefits compared to its predecessors. Among them are higher memory density allowing for more RAM per slot, lower power usage, and higher speeds. The presentation noted that servers are likely to get the new RAM first as "many applications, like databases and analytics, are executed in memory." The updated DDR will offer improvements, but won't be as much of a step up as some other technology in the early stages of research and development that were viewed as possible upgrade paths from DDR. Technology such as phase-change memory, resistive RAM, and magnetoresistive RAM would also offer the ability to store data in RAM when the system is powered down.
