Sharing wifi with neighbors?

Recommended Posts

I have done a little searching but was not sure the best way to go about doing this.

What I want to do is share my wifi with my girlfriend who lives 4 houses down the street, she keeps going through all my data on her phone, but I don't want to have to have separate service at her house. She would be using the wifi on her phone, tablet and her smart tv she does not have a computer or laptop. I am just not quite sure what the best route to go is. Can I use a range extender? Should I use an outdoor repeater? Do I need something at her house? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I think 4 houses down would be too far.  And if it did connect, the service would be slow and inconsistent.  This is just based on my little experience with it though.  I'm interested in some responses as well.

My buddy sends wifi to his old girlfriend who lives a block or two away.

I'll see what he's using, it's pretty rock solid though!

You can buy a kit that includes all hardware needed to install  Access Points, Client Bridge, Client Router, Repeater,.. performance/power dictates cost.

Four houses away would be simple,.. best if you have direct line of sight from rooftops, pole mount outdoor access points on roof,.. run Ethernet ports from rooftop assess point down to internal switch or wireless router.

Check around online for something in your price range,..  https://engenius.factoryoutletstore.com/cat/30439/Engenius-Outdoor-Wifi-Access-Points.html

Apparently my buddy uses Ubiquiti parts.  Not cheap by any means, minimum investment is around $100 for ~10 Mbps.

You'll need one of those antenna APs to beam it from rooftop level, Ubiquiti. Pricey upfront, but it'll pay itself off in a few months. I think its normally $30-50/month just for internet service in most areas.

I have a pump house 1/2 mile away with monitoring software and some gates with cameras all with AP WiFi,  weather has no effect, except for snow build-up on dish will cause issues.
