Upgrading my 5 year old system

Hi All,

I am thinking about giving my PC an upgrade. I discussed which SSD to get in another topic and I'm pretty much settled on one of two options will pick one of them later this week.

Now, I'm thinking either to upgrade my GPU possibly get GTX 960, GTX 970 or maybe the GTX 1070 or getting a new CPU - Board - RAM

I know the difference between both upgrade options. One will boost my graphic experience. The other will boost my overall experience but the graphics department will not experience that much of a change.

I want your opinion on which path shall I choose. Currently, I casually game every once in a while. I mostly play Hearthstone and sometimes Starcraft 2. And occasionally Assassins creed, Blacklight. I did not experience any significant lag with my current machine but it sometimes happens. So, which path shall I choose?

For the GPUs, I want to get GTX 970 or 1070 when its released but I don't want to pay more than 280$ (after shipping and import fees) in a GPU for a system that will not be handling a ton of games like I used to do. So with the current prices, the GTX 960 sounds the appropriate choice. However, I want to know will it perform well on a big 42 - 50 Inch TV at 1920x1080? Or shall I try and find a cheaper GTX 970?

My current card, the GTX 275 is doing very well on my 20 inch screen with 1600x900 res. But I will get either a 27 inch screen with 1920x1080 and a TV for movies..etc with the same res. Or probably will skip the monitor, and get a 50 inch TV.

Let me know what you guys think of which path shall I choose and if you have any recommendations as where to find a good deal for the GTX 970?

A GTX960 should do quite fine at only 1080P. I'd actually just hunt for a 2500K and overclock it or even a 3570K if the price is similar (and the board's bios supports it) and call it a day! I've had no issues with my system, stock clocked, for some time now and I'm running 2560x1600.

Well if I'm to upgrade my CPU - Board - RAM I think it would be best to get a skylake system rather trying to revive my system with a new CPU. It would cost more I agree but it will age better. I think maybe a new GPU to enhance the experience and then get i5 6400 + Gigabyte H170 + 16 GB DDR4

Maybe if you could cut the cost down decently with the sale of your system but the real life differences after Sandy bridge just are too small to ever notice once you reach this level. maybe add another 8GB in and a better CPU if you really feel like yours is holding you back (though I guarantee it isn't..games are so GPU bound it's not even funny!). My friend can still play games pretty happily with a 660Ti and an E8400 Core 2 Duo

Well that means the better choice is to go for a new GPU then get a new CPU - Board RAM later on if needed. This is exactly what I thought but I wanted to get other opinions.

Now then, I can get this Gigabyte GTX 970  or this GTX 960 right now or should I wait for GTX 1070 and get at a supposedly ~379$ ?

Personally, I'm not after the best as I once was since I'm not playing as much games as before but, if the release of the GTX 1070 would mean getting something that will perform immensly well since its better than Titan X and will age very well because of that, then I can throw in the extra cash. But I fear that it might be release above 400$ which will put marginally beyond my reach because of high shipping and import fees. :S Which would increase the chance of missing out on those two good deals. So, what do you think is best for me? shall I get the latest GPU or shall I give in and get one of those two?

I usually play games such as Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Heros of the storm, Assassin's creed, Blacklight, Battle field. And I play them on a 32 inch 1920x1080. I personally leaning towards the 1070 and 970 because I dont think 960 will age very well.

I would wait on the GTX 1070. GTX TitanX performance for $449 or less.

Is there a way to pre order the card? Hopefully from Amazon.

Also is the 379$ MSRP accurate? I mean when the regular edition start selling, will it be priced at 379$ exactly? or is it just a starting point from which the price goes up? I can pay up to 400$ but I prefer paying less for the card itself as I will be charged alot for import and shipping fees.

If you can wait, I'd wait until the 1070 comes out just because it may lower the price of the 970 as it enters the market and used 970s may start flooding the market and going down in price if many people replace then with 1070. The 970 would be slightly overkill for your intended resolution and the 1070 would be overoverkill lol
