ivangela Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Hi all, I am embarrassed to say I have beenrenting a Comcast modem for years and just realized it! For the same amount as the rental fee, I can upgrade my service and get 3x the bandwidth. That is the plan, so i am in the market for a new modem compatible with Comcast. I am looking to spend about $100 or so but would spend more if it was justified. I was thinking this for $90, Suggestions? Thanks
bp9801 Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 It should be a solid one. Little bit more advanced than what I run, but mine's given me no problems.
cchalogamer Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 (edited) Personally I'm running the Arris SB6183, bought it for the same money as you're looking at and considering Arris bought that division of Motorola in 2012/13ish chances are they're basically the same thing anyway. I wouldn't have any issues with it, though I would make sure that Comcast supports it for their faster services if that's something you might do in the near future, for example the SB6141 is capable of 300+Mbps, yet TWC wont support it on anything faster than the 100/10 service here. I went with the one I did as there's a solid chance I'll up my speed at some point in the nearish future even though I'm only at 100/10 now. One of my top reasons for going with a SurfBoard branded modem was ease of resell should my old ISP start offering fiber in this area. They are very popular and it just seemed like the better plan for me vs something a bit cheaper at the time. ivangela Posted May 27, 2016 Posted May 27, 2016 Comcast seems to support only Arris modems with the SB6190 being the "new" and the one you have, SB6283, being on th elist of older modems. The 6183 and the one I linked to, the MB7420, are the same as far as specs go...both 686Mbps and 16x4. The 6190 is faster with more channels 32x8 but I'm not sure it makes a difference if my plan is no faster...
cchalogamer Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 I don't know what the fastest plan they offer in your area is, but unless they are offering over 300/30 and you plan to use it, I would stick with the tier we started with as it should last you a good while. At the end of the day I certainly have no complaints about Motorola.Arris stuff and they should start saving you sooni (TWC is up to $10 a mo for their modem rental in this area so it wont take me long )
IVIYTH0S Posted May 28, 2016 Posted May 28, 2016 (edited) I'd just get a SB6121 or a SB6141 used or new if cheap. They'll serve all your needs well. My SB6141 put out 150Mbps (plan was for 105Mbps) before I downgraded the service to performance (30Mbps) because I didn't need all that speed.
