Assassin X Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 I see on the news online Win 10 recently has been auto installing on computers. Anyone way to avoid this? I attached two pictures of what the annoying nag screen has been doing on my system for months now. First picture is of the nag screen attached to my taskbar that doesn't go away. Next screenshot is of the "Windows Update" where now it suddenly says "Update to Win 10"/"Get Started". Which also leads me to the question can I run my Windows Update WITHOUT it installing Win 10? I tried looking under the updates and it doesn't show it. But I'm not sure if it sneaks it in anyways or not. I don't want to have to go through the process (which I heard doesn't work right sometimes) of reverting back to Win 7 if by accident WIn 10 installed. I have no interest in Win 10. Maybe years from now. But right now I'm fine with Win 7 since I just installed it not long after it came out and it was free with Vista. paulktreg Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Resistance is futile. Have a read of this it may help?
SpikeSoprano Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Yes, turn windows updates off, there are very few for w7 now anyway, they are all for w8 or w10. I've done manual updates for the last 2 years, that way I can take what I need not what microsoft wants me to take.
Assassin X Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Hmm. Well one of the links in it (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351) but it says to look for HLKM in the registry. Mine are all HKEY. No HLKM to start with. The policies I could find didn't have a "Disable" registry thing. I may try the tool though from the other link. As for WIndows update, yeah mines set to off. I just go in manually every few months to update stuff, usually its just "Security updates". Maybe I just won't update anymore unless I hear of an important update that is needed.
ir_cow Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Yeah you can disable the auto install now via the uninstall update menu. I did it on my main computer. I can't find the article now but all you do is uninstall the Get Windows 10 Update which is labeled KBXXXXXX and than tell it to hide for windows updates also. You will never be bothered with it again or auto downloads. Edit: I found the page. It shows you different ways. But really the easiest is to just uninstall the KB update and hide it forever. No need to RegEdit. 1: http://www.ghacks.net/2015/04/17/how-to-remove-windows-10-upgrade-updates-in-windows-7-and-8/ 2: http://www.myce.com/news/how-to-uninstall-kb3035583-the-windows-10-downloader-for-windows-7-and-8-1-75681/ 3: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/remove-update#1TC=windows-
