As part of the Steam hardware survey, Valve periodically gathers information on the computer specifications of gamers. The most recent results from December 2015 are about what you would expect, with NVIDIA dominating the rankings as a whole and taking the top spot as well. The GeForce GTX 970 is the most popular graphics option, edging out the Intel HD Graphics 4000 by 0.07%. The integrated option from Intel has been losing ground for several months, indicating that users are "shifting away from integrated graphics cards in favor of discrete graphics cards." The GeForce GTX 960 saw the largest monthly increase from November while the GTX 760 saw a decrease, representing a shift to the latest mid-range offering. The total GPU share of each manufacturer is 54.61% for NVIDIA, 26.33% for AMD, 18.66% for Intel, and 0.5% for other.

Are integrated graphics as a whole losing ground, or is it the HD 4000 losing ground? Newer offerings could be starting to replace it (at last). I've got an intel HD 6100 that I'm fairly content with.

This is a Steam Hardware Survey and you can't do much gaming with integrated graphics, so the huge disparity should not be surprising.

You'd be surprised with how decent the newer integrated stuff is. I've been playing GTA 4 and Dirt 3 at 1920x1080 with medium settings on my Intel 6100 and they run pretty smooth.

So you're playing an 8yr old game and 5yr old game, respectively, at just medium settings? I rest my case.
