Dignan Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 Ususally I am pretty good about what I want to get with my money but lately (as a result of losing my job <_< ) I have been playing poker for a "part-time" job... The thing is, the card room I play at has payouts for 4 of a kinds and I hit the quad 2's with a $760 payout... I already made my $100 that I usually come out with and I have no bills to speak of... So what do I get? It doesn't have to be computer related, but I am clueless... I have the 2 x A64 rigs and a decent folding farm (once I get it back up).... What do I get? If YOU had $700 what would you buy? I have one hour until traffic clears and I go to frys and possibly buy something stupid.... I need some good advice... Bosco Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 Got an LCD? Want one? I picked up a NEC MultiSync LCD 17" at CC yesterday. It's 1280x1024 @ 75Hz native, 17ms response time (good for gaming). It's a very nice LCD and for $499, you can't beat the price (even cheaper on the Internet like at Pricewatch). Plus, if you didn't like it after using it for a while, CC will take it back without any restocking fee. I'm going to take it back in a few days though, 17 inch viewable is a little small compared to my 18inch viewable (19inch) CRT I had been using. I have a Dell 20inch (with 15ms response time) LCD that should be coming in tomorrow and it was only $799 (had a special $200 off when I bought it yesterday). I would also recommend WD 10,000 RPM SATA 73GB Hard drives. Run them in a RAID and you'll see a nice speed increase when loading applications and windows I would also go ahead and preorder; BF1942 Vietnam, UT2k4, and Doom 3. If you don't have an MP3 Player, you may want to pick up an iPod. Just some ideas
bigred Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 why spend it right now? I guess if you're good at poker put it back into it and make more (less risky than playing with stocks and stuff like that since you have some direct control). OR if you're looking to spend it on computer stuff, buy something with a return on investment. for example some bigger drives, and start doing some web hosting (can't hurt to help make some extra cash right?). sound like you're in the same boat as me right now. can't figure out what's left to buy at the moment. I've got $4500 sitting aside waiting for the next opteron or FX chip to come out, and the dfi nf3 250 board for it.... with a large amount of ram and a few other goodies. might put it into truck parts too... expidition is getting put back together. new axles (well, since it never really had axles and the ones I used aren't exactly new...), new suspension, new exhaust, new wheel and tires, and some of the body pannels I ordered are finally showing up. blah, should go spend my time out in the garage with that today instead of going to the store and doing paperwork all day long. Since I started I saved half until I hit my 1K buffer and playing higher limits (play 3/6 right now) you don't have all the drunk people to take money from.... Plus I don't know if I'm that good, but I win at 3/6 all the time...As far as hosting goes, that would be cool but theres always an if.... I would IF my cable didn't suck, I can't even remote term serve my own computer (not VNC the windows RDP!!) with any sort of luck... For 3mb down the up sure sucks.... I was about the raptors.... That would be fun.... But if I can't buy 2 LCD's I couldn't do it at all... If you've seen my "workstation" the dual monitors is the piece that really "ties the room togeather" ..... Maybe I will go around like an idiot with a cart and see if I like anything I pick up.... But I do think 2 raptors (maybe only 36GB ones) are on the menu for today.... Frys is like Cheers (the TV show) to me, everyone may know your name, except there is no drinking and I always lose over $200... I would buy an Asus P4C800 Deluxe $189.99 (frys here in houston) A 3.2C Bare is $284.99 on frys outpost web site OCZ PC4200 EL 2.5-4-4-7 2 X 256mb $185.95 at Axion Technoligies in Houston online Total $660.97 without tax or shipping on the RAM but you can get some different RAM cheaper and have a very good folding machine, run 2 versions of FAH! I am going to build a couple more systems myself and as cheap as the 3.2C is now that is whats going in mine!

I am sure you know this Dignon but I will mention so that others may be able to benefit from it . If you are going for 2 western digital 36gb 10,000 rpm raptors (that is what I have in my set up 2 - 36gb as raid 0) or any hard drive or drives as far as this goes and you do not need the IDE cables or serial cables etc. just buy the bare hard drive or drives it saves a few dollars especially on the raptors, on outpost site/frys web site the kit is $171.99 with cables, the bare drive $129.99 = $42.00 bucks a drive X 2 = $84.00 to spend on something else. Dignan Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 Or I could freaking buy this... A Koolance PROTOYPE!!! It's a Lian-Li PC-6070 that they made one of a kind (possible production model).... This thing is soooo sweet, just look at it.... Thank goodness for living in the town koolance is based out of.... I was told by them that if they wanted it to get it into production, they need people to call and let them know that there is an interest.... They have a toll free number, though I don't know were it goes in the store, just say you saw the Lian-Li koolance case online and was looking to see if and when they could come available.... Infotech (same person owns koolance) 1-877-51-ORDER
kingcobweb Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 I say, unless you already have this, get some incredibly fast DSL. I'm sure you could get some blazing fast stuff for $50/month over what you're paying now.
