I built this computer for a guy a while back. He called me up and said he was having trouble with it so could I take a look. I said sure. When he booted it up it would keep resetting the video, so the monitor woudl turn on and off again. Almost every single time he did anything. I figured it was a bad driver so I updated it and then it happened more!! So i said skrew it and reinstalled xp, and after updating the video driver it heppened again! So I figure its just the video card, I pull it out and put in a new one, a pci card that sucks really bad and it does it with that one!! I put in a diffrent one and so far it hasnt done it but it has been incapable of bringing to a high resolution.

Usually when i have problems that seem to be demonic in nature its the motherboard...crap gigabyte, they suck, dont buy from them.

Anyway, anyone have any ideas?

what kind of video card is it? It could be a power supply problem.

In my old computer my 9700 pro would sometimes get fussy and not work when plugged into the power supply. But ever since I switched out my old power supply I havent had any problems.

If its not a card like the 9700 pro that uses the power supply, I would just tend to think that the card died.

Maybe update the Bios on the mobo? If the bios is up to date, then maybe the agp slot is shot.

If it does the same thing with 2 different cards, and if one of the cards you tested with isn't a power hog, then I'd lean toward it being a mobo problem.

Maybe a bad monitor? *shrug*

My girlfriend's monitor does that, only it's everytime graphics modes are changed...

It will turn off and on again four or five times when windows is loading...

Maybe it's the monitor and it's supposed to do that? Maybe not, and the monitor is just broken... Just trying to help :O)

Did you try tapping the videocard when you turned on power?I just had a similar problem with my 9800 pro after I built my new computer. After leaving it off all night, it would do the same thing in the morning. Don't know why it took it sitting all night to do it. The monitor would continually turn off and on. I tapped my video card lightly, and the monitor displayed an image, but it was all distorted. I kept tapping the card until the image appeared correct. Then rebooted and it worked fine. Wound up exchanging the card and haven't had the problem since. Hope that helps.
