Windows 7 VS 8 VS 8.1 VS 10

Recommended Posts

It did seem pretty nice and I'm glad there's a way to cut down the tiles, it seemed way too big and overwhelmingly cluttered but again I spent less than 5 minutes with it total.

I just really want shutting down, restarting, sleeping, and hibernating to have the same ease of operation as the classic shell/start menu. Why Microsoft continues to make it different is beyond me, I very often like to be able to sleep, shutdown or restart my computer with the monitor off.

I guess I'll spend more time with it, maybe there's a way to move the power options to the right to be traditional again since you say it's very customizable, it was *only* one spot up from the bottom but I'm a stickler on this lol

I didn't like the 10 beta largely because it's geared to mobile devices and steers you to the store to buy apps.  And I don't like the start menu, mostly just the "all programs" menu.  But I've put on 5 PC's so far and as has been said it can be tweaked to make it more palatable to a desktop user.  I use Classic Shell, (IOBit Start Menu 8 isn't too bad either) and many of my objections are dissipating.  It's fast, and will run OK on as little as 2GB of RAM on an older laptop.  What has sold me the most however is that it is a free restarting of the Windows OS obsolescence clock, LOL.  ;)

New Nvidia drivers last night.  Everything runs much better now.  I can definitely say Windows 10 for games is the best!

Was about to ask this question myself, still debating on doing the free upgrade, been using 7 64 bit for over 5 years now, just did a fresh install of 7 2 weeks ago since my SSD took a dump, if I do upgrade I might wait a little bit do to recent mass driver install / upgrade trauma.

Windows 10 for my game systems now. Still lots of tweaks. Might be heading there on my main system, soon, then my photo and video editing systems.

You can always revert back if you don't like it, give it a try and make sure you install Classic Shell to keep the start menu tidy lol

SO far I have it on a couple rigs without issues. My guess is that the baseline stuff is going to be well supported but that custom or really high end stuff is going to take a while to get the support it needs.

I was very skeptic towards Win10 after dealing with "metro UI" of Win 8. I had Win 8 on my laptop for a few months, it felt clumsy and somewhat "alien" to that familiar Windows feel compared to 7. However, at some point i decided to give Win10 a shot due to the simple reason - Windows 7 wont be there forever. Sooo... I installed Win 10, and to be honest, never looked back. For me, Windows is just a way to access my games. Gaming is what i do. So, there wasnt much of a difference really, once i had the driver problem figured out. I click the icon on my desktop, game works, therefore its good!

Claaaaaaassic Shell!! It makes Windows 8/8.1 and 10 just as familiar at 7 but zippier and better in some ways. There are a few things I miss from 7, but nothing I couldn't make small adjustments for or simply re-implement myself.
