Microsoft has announced at Gamescom that the Xbox One will soon have "full-featured DVR functionality" that will be available to all owners with no additional subscription required. Television shows can be recorded in the background and can be streamed to Windows 10 devices using the Xbox app. The recordings can also be transferred to other devices to be viewed elsewhere. A Microsoft spokesperson clarified the functionality stating "DVR for Over-the-Air TV lets you record live over-the-air TV only," meaning that you won't be able to record cable or satellite broadcasts.

So what's the point? Seems totally useless, who watches over the air TV now a days?

We do at my house, as do plenty of other people who do not have cable or satellite for any number of reasons. Just because it is not useful to you, does not mean it is useless to others.

Netflix, Hulu, Youtube? There are a few shows that I used to watch over the air, but now there are all posted on youtube regularly, seems like a feature that should have been on it from the start.

Everyone who bought the digital tuner for their XBox. Reading the Polygon source, presumably the tuner has sold well enough for Microsoft to decide to add this functionality.

There are still plenty of channels that are available over the air including major networks like ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. Last time I checked if you want to watch the latest episodes when they air or shortly thereafter you need to watch them live, DVR them, or obtain them through "other" means.
