CheeseMan42 Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 The United States Internal Revenue Service revealed yesterday that hackers were able to obtain information for about 100,000 taxpayers since the middle of February. The hackers used information collected from another source to get past an online authentication process to make off with "a detailed dossier of their personal information including income and social security numbers." The information required to get past this page includes "Social Security information, date of birth, tax filing status and street address," which likely indicates that the IRS system wasn't as deeply compromised as recent attacks on retailers such as Target. Taxpayers targeted by the attack could be victims of a tax refund theft scheme, but are unlikely to see compromised credit cards or bank accounts. The IRS plans to contact all people targeted in the attack, and will pay for credit monitoring for those that had their information confirmed to be stolen.
