Waco Posted June 1, 2015 Posted June 1, 2015 I got a few things for the Miata. New oil pressure sensor (man, they're expensive), new lip spoiler (WOOO!), and the LSD/axles/driveshaft arrived. Sitting ready for the drivetrain swap:
Waco Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Maybe this weekend they'll go in! I, of course, had to clean them up and throw some red on them. The driveshaft I'll never see again, but the axles are visible from behind the car.
bp9801 Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Look pretty for something you'll never see. Axles do look good. Should be a nice contrast with the matte black.
Boinker Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Hey Waco. This is a power-train removal for you. Go play in the water they said. It would be fun they said.
Waco Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Look pretty for something you'll never see. Axles do look good. Should be a nice contrast with the matte black. The thing that still surprises me is how freakin' heavy the differential is. It's 80 pounds...and the housing is cast aluminum! Hey Waco. This is a power-train removal for you. Go play in the water they said. It would be fun they said. I can't imagine any German cars are any fun to work on...
bp9801 Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Heavy ass aluminum then. Damn.
Waco Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 The snout is steel and the gears (I assume) are all hardened steel. Still, I didn't expect the weight.
Puck Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Yup, a little. Going down to a 4.10 ratio instead of 4.3. 66 should be top of second, roughly, thanks to the higher rev limit I have set. I'm probably going to end up with 4.30s...and with the no OD Powerglide it won't be very fun on the highway LOL. Not that its a street car, but I want to be able to troll the noobs at the local meets with my lil NA LT1. I'm still going to swaggar jack your matte black w/ gloss black racing stripes though! First looking for a good deal on some 15" Prostars then I'm ordering the DYC kit for paint it.

The newer ones anyhow. Everything is modular so that monster you see on the 5 ton bench is the entire front powertrain and driveline. The wiring harness disconnects in three spots and then it's remove lines and hose. Power steering cooler lines, trans cooler lines, coolant, a/c lines, drive shaft, then main starter/alt cable(just the side on the power surge box). After that disconnect the electrical connectors at the shocks and remove bolt on bottom. Remove upper control arm bolts. Fit table, lower straight down. It's a nice solo job or with help if your nervous. You can do the same in the rear as well. Just have to make sure the air suspension is bled out.... Well maybe you are right but they do put alot of conveniences in. The big one is the engine controller wiring to the chassis can. 1 data and low amp power connector then three main power connects that are all within a Foot of one another. Insurance nearly tl'd it. But it will have a new lease on life as of tomorrow.
Waco Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Insurance nearly tl'd it. But it will have a new lease on life as of tomorrow. This is why I love wrenching. Where others would give up...I love not being them. On the Miata topic... Wow...the axles came right out today. The diff? Goddammit, that thing made me cranky...but it's out. Oh, and what's in? EVERYTHING! Today has got to be the first day I've ever worked on a car where everything just sorta worked out. Everything out... The wifey doing her thing (learning bondo and prepping for paint) Holy hell, it's in. The rear subframe brace needed a new coat of paint...so yeah, red. No, I did not paint that in the garage, I moved it in when I heard thunder. I can't wait to take it for a spin. The lower ratio (4.1 instead of 4.3) should fix the speedo and make 1st gear slightly more useful. No more one wheel peels!
IVIYTH0S Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 Looks great, I love taller gearing myself.
