Microsoft to give away Windows 10 as free upgrade

Recommended Posts

I hope it is good also. I just ordered 8.1 for my new build just because it was cheaper than 7 with the thought that I will just upgrade to 10.

First thing you do after you setup the user account is unlock the hidden administrator account, and then download classic shell and set it to look like windows 7...you're welcome lol

Yeah I have it on my laptop and use classic shell but hell I am all about making it less horrible so I will be checking out the hidden administrator account for sure.

Classic shell is like 99% of it but for some reason the main user account just doesn't get the full power it ought, so it's better to enable the other if you have to (I made it my primary and only account on both my machines as a matter of fact)

Running as a full admin is a great way to destroy your computer. :P It's disabled by default for a good reason.

What exactly is it that you're doing that requires that account over a user created administrator?

I'll be updating for dx12 and Xbox One streaming, maybe I'll finally beat Sunset Overdrive.

i put the win10 technical preview on one of my older machines last week, just to test it out, (and posted a few of my findings on my facebook) and while i had intended to dig deeper into it beyond the gui, this week, i got called back out to drive for this saturday and won't have time to do it justice...soo maybe when i get back from this next trip i'll be able to look deeper into win 10...

mean while, just the gui changes are a bit weird and will take some getting used to, (my first impression was something like win 7 crossed with ubuntu and some win 8 thown in) but that's just me...i had really gotten used to the active corners of win 8-8.1, and those are now missing, there is an option to set your gui to open in metro style or you can keep the metro attached to the start button popup, sort of win 7 style, and scroll thru the metro icons with the mouse wheel in the lower lefthand corner...basically the gui is pretty familiar and reminiscent of it's predecessors and should be fairly easy to navigate by anyone who regularly logs in here on OCC...

i have received the tech preview response app invite today, but havent had the time to give my feedback yet....maybe tomorrow...

Sorry to resurrect this, but, Waco, how does full admin destroy a computer?

If you run as a full admin all the time anything you run can make changes as an admin. Limited user accounts are AWESOME for making it obvious when an application or website is doing bad things.

Has anyone started seeing the Windows 10 free upgrade notification in your status tray yet?  I've got it on all of my Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs now.   :)

Reserved my "upgrades" since I understand that the downloaded .ISO can do either upgrade or a full install.  Ugh..........  I hate the thought of installing a new OS on either my gaming machine or my HTPC.

Speaking of HTPC - I read that Windows 10 will not have a Media player, but that Microsoft will offer a DVD player application.

While it's not the best media player, I've grown fond of WMP in Windows 7 for playing back music and .avi files.
